Hi I've had my Powercolor Radeon 9800Pro for about 3-4 months now and its been working fairly well up until yesterday. Since yesterday it?s been freezing a lot, and the cat 3.9's GPU recover feature keeps kicking in telling me it had to reset my videocard when i was in the middle of a game. Sometimes though I don?t even get this lucky and the little bastard just freezes my comp up altogether. I live in Australia and atm we are having the hottest days we have had for more than 6 months (as we are now in summer) and I assumed maybe the heat was to much for it, so I've been leaving the side of my case off and have even downclocked the card a little. This has decreased the regularity of the freezes but not stopped them altogether. The card has never been a high overclocker, maxing out 10-15mhz above default in both clock and mem speeds.

So really my question is, do you think this sounds right? Maybe the heat is getting too much for it? (dodgy powercolor) do you think maybe a new GPU fan would fix it? Or is the card simply on its way out and no amount of cooling will help it?

Thanks.

Keep the side of the case down and place a hi-powered table fan aimed towards the gpu

It might be the 3.9 drivers, my computer freezes with these drivers also with my 9800 pro Ati card, going to go back to the 3.7's

This might not be it but it's worth a check, make sure the GPU fan actually works :D

Yeah I tried older drivers and it still happens, except with them their is no GPU recover so its worse. Its now night time so its cooler, and I have a deskfan blowing onto the card. So far so good......
