9800pro + fog = mouselag

Okay, I'm really getting irritated.

Specs:
xp2500
512
9800pro
abit nf7s

About two months ago I got a 9800pro. I fired up ET, map was railgun. The entire map is in solid fog. I got so much mouselag it was ridiculous--completely unplayable. Note, I was previously playing on a GF4 4200 and everything was great. I didn't change any settings. (The current ATI driver at the time fixed the ET issue from the last version.) So I figure I was busy with other things, I just wouldn't play ET and would deal with it later.

So yesterday I decide to give Far Cry a shot. First things first, I remove my catalysts as per the ATI site and grab the latest version. Start the game on moderate graphics settings. The first bit has fog, ugghh. I get through the starting tunnels, the fog/mouselag goes away. The game is liquid smooth. I end up inside a METAL PIPE and there is the "dusty room" effect, ie, fog. Instant mouselag. While I'm getting shot at. Unplayable :(

So now my problem is no longer driver or game specific. I don't know what else to try. "Ohh, your settings are too high, change this, change that." Well, I was playing ET on a GF4 and it was perfect and I had ZERO problems. Pop the radeon in and instant mouselag. There is no way that the GF4 should outperform the 9800pro in ANY situation, at the exact same graphics options configurations no less.

This is sort of frustrating. I get a nice video card and I can't play FPSes.

Anyone have any ideas?

Smoke and fog means bad framerate on every card I've ever owned. I'm not sure if it's worse on current ATI hardware than Nvidia, but I also have a 9800 and it is extremely frustrating.

Framerates are absolutely solid. All the input is delayed.. I move the mouse, it takes a quarter of a second to register the movement, etc. Graphically, its still liquid smooth.

You sure about that? I'd check while running a frame counter to make sure. I know my frames drop hardcore sometimes due to fog. Everything still looks smooth, but it slows to a crawl.

Zero? Far Cry is single player.

No ping problems in ET. Ping lag doesn't do that to you anyway.

Best drivers I've used with ET has been 3.7's. Turn on the frame rate counter and check the frames. Try making a game and run around the level see if the frames drop. I know it does a bunch when there is fog. May want to edit the config.cfg for your profile. Turn off the atmospheric effects.
