Recently replaced my Geforce4 Ti4400 with a Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder. Ever since putting the card in, I couldn't power on the system. I just figured that the Antec 300 watt power supply wasn't enough for the card with everything else I had in the box (3 hard drives, 2 CD drives, Raid controller, a few fans). I installed an Antec 400 watt power supply, still the same thing. I would push the power button and the system would attempt to power up for a split second, then immediately power off again. As soon as I take the Radeon card out of the system and hit the power button, it powers right up. I can't imagine that a 400 watt power supply wasn't enough but nevertheless, I installed a brand new Antec True Power 430 watt PS. Still had the same issue.

At this point I moved the system to a new case (something I was planning on doing anyway) and removed 1 of the hard drives, and the raid controller. Here is the system as it stands:

Epox 8RDA+
Athlon 2400XP
512 MB Corsair PC-2700
2 ATA 100 IDE Drives
1 DVD-Rom Drive
1 DVD+R/RW Drive
3 80MM Fans
ANTEC 430W PS

At this point, I should be able to power this thing no problem with a much smaller PS yet the F'ing thing won't power up . I ran all of this, with the extra HD and raid controller with my GeForce card on a 300W PS with ZERO issues.

Is my Radeon card defective?????? I love the card but I'm about to flush it down the toilet.

It may be. Something is certainly wrong. I have a 9800pro AIW and use an Antec TruPower430 with no problems. It also powers 2 SATA drives, floppy, CD Burner, DVD and a bunch of fans with no trouble. So I would suspect that something else is wrong with the card.

They suck alot of juice on the 5v rail. Try disconnecting drives and then see if it boots.

That may be, but not so much it kills his system. This is my system, same video and PS and similiar number of other devices. And I have never had any trouble with power. So its got to be something else. Unless he has had a super run of bad luck and there is something wrong with his TruPower 430.

You could try bumping te AGP voltage up to 1.6v or even 1.7v,as to a defective card, well the only way to find out is to try it in a different PC.Btw try clearing the BIOS as well.

Yeah, did you remember to connect the extra power connector to the card?

I have another question for ya. You say you love the card. But youv'e never seen it run since you bought it. Do you love it for how it looks? Snazzy heat sinks and such? No offense but that statement was kinda funny.

"Ahem" Now about that power connector.....

Have you contacted Epox?

I was using an Epox p4pea+, it's an intel 845pe chipset. It was not compatible with
any newer video cards. I ended up upgrading my mobo and everything is fine.

Do you have access to another computer to try the card out on? I tried mine in my parent's
computer and it ran fine. I actually had problems with a fx5900nu and an ati 9800np. Both
worked fine in my parents computer however.

Check it on someone elses rig if you can! Good luck.

I'm having the SAME problem with an AIW9800pro. I've RMAd both the MoBo and VidCard, and got the MoBo back today, no go. This only happens when the Vidcard is plugged into the PSU, when it's in the slot and not plugged in the fan on the card spins. I've had the system for 3 months now, and haven't been able to use the thing without my old S3 videocard.

I even tried a new PSU (Antec tru550.)

My setup

Gigabyte K8-NNXP mobo
Athlon 64 3200+ (socket 754)
ATi 9800pro AIW
1BG Kingston ram
Seagate 160GB SATA

It says my AGP drivers are installed in the system menu as well, but when I tried to install the newest chipset drivers the proggie goes through installshell and stops. Just letting you know you're not alone. I'd call ATi, but their tech support is closed after 7et.

found this on ati's aiw page, sounds similar to me:

To the first poster:

I can all but guarantee that your motherboard has an incompatibility with the card, and since they didn't know about it until today in spite of me calling them 3 or 4 times, there's no ETA on getting it fixed. I just got off the phone, and that is what I was told. I hope you can return it, because they're (ATi) giving me the run-around. They refuse to exchange (only offering me the trade-up!!) the card for a working (non-AIW) model, and I'm basically going to have to call googlegear and BEG them to let me exchange the card, which won't work becuase I've had it for 3 months.

I'm totally pissed because ATi originally told me to RMA the card to googlegear on day ONE instead of realizing that it was an incompatibility issue, and now I'm screwed because I did what they asked me to.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I've got an update (at least) for my case:

I got a call from ATi today saying that there was indeed some sort of incompatibility with the AIW9800. They are sending me a new card as of today.

So if you dont' have this sorted out yet, make sure to give them a call as it might be the same issue. Ask to speak with Steve Botelho.

Cool. Another situation that arises is that the AIW9800 will trip the "overload" circuit on many PSUs on boot. A time-delay circuit of a second resolved that ... I forget where I saw that on a review site though.
