9800pro (agp) vs. X600xt (pci-e)?

Benchmarks are widely available; please search... 😛

I'm pretty sure the 9800Pro is faster than the X600XT. The 6600GT (either AGP or PCIe) is significantly faster than either (the regular X800 -- but not the X800SE -- would be the ATI equivalent to the 6600GT).
 
the 9800 pro would lay the smack down 😉

iirc a x600xt is just a 9600xt with a PCI-E bridge...

6600GT is basically on par or marginally better than the 9800 pro (except d3 and Q4, where it's a good bit better).

 
I like my 9800Pro, but it's getting long in the tooth, and the 6600GT is significantly faster.

Check out digit-life's latest benches. An across-the-board sweep for the 6600GT; it's even faster at HL2. The 6600GT has less memory bandwidth than the 9800Pro (which hurts it somewhat with AA/AF enabled), but it's also got 30% more fillrate at stock settings.

i've owned both (and i never o'cd my 9800 pro, but i've put the hurt on my 6600GT (575/1145)) and even then difference was negligable (in fact it's marginally slower in Farcry with AA)...certainly not enough to notice unless i was keen on my D3/Q4 (which i'm not).

Fair enough; I haven't owned a 6600GT, so I can only go by my experience with the 9800Pro and relative benchmark results. On paper, the 6600GT is better (at least without AA/AF), and the benchmarks seem to hold to those numbers. Depending on your settings and system, a 10-20% speed boost in your graphics card may be pretty 'negligable'. AA/AF closes the gap (and in some circumstances, may reverse the standings), but the 6600GT should be the faster card overall.
 
Was searching for a relavent thread, and this seemed an appropriate place to ask... Is it worth upgrading from a 9800pro, given AGP is dead now? Or should I wait and build a new system?

I'm running a 3200XP, 1GB RAM and a 9800pro (obviously). I can run most things (HL2, CS:S etc) in 1280x1024 (my LCD native) with about 60fps+, which is great, but I'd really like to be able to enable AA etc without huge framerate cuts.

If I were to invest in a X800 or a 6800 would I see a great performance gain?

Also, are the power requirements of these cards way above those of the 9800. Thanks for your help.
 
A X850XT on AGP would be the best choice here... They will significantly improve your framerate, in every game... You could still take this last upgrade, as your whole subsystem, bar the RAM (if it's PC3200) and HDD, will have to be replaced, which will cost a lot more than the $ 250 you'll be spending on the X850XT...

Power requirements will be about the same, as a Radeon 9800XT draws more power than a X800XT, so in this case it will be no big difference either...

EDIT: BTW, waiting what Socket AM2 brings, is in your case a wiser thing to do... After that, you can still decide whether to go with Socket 939 (which will hopefully be dirt cheap by then) or Socket AM2...

I'm running in a SFF, although heat isn't an issue, size is. Don't suppose you know whether the X800XTs, or indeed any of the other cards mentioned in this thread , are a lot bigger (physically) than a 9800pro?

Yeah, I think I'm gonna wait until later in the year to build a new system. Feels like there is a lot more harware changes going on at the moment, than when I last built one.

single slot. But you'd have to have rocks in your head to think a 6600GT is a worthwhile upgrade from a 9800 pro 😛
 
Yeah, a little pointless.

Just been looking at pics of x800pro's and they look like they are single slot and probably easy going on power. Just wish the prices had dropped more.

It IS worth hanging in there to make the big hike up, and for the moment your 9800 pro is very capable still...heck i'd still have mine if my powercolor ones didn't keep overheating on me after a few months (supplier eventually gave me a 6600GT instead).
