I am new to overclocking vid cards, so would like some input. I have a built by ATI 9800pro 128meg card and was wondering if it is feasible to give it some more juice? I am currently using the ATI omega drivers and notice the core and memory specs can be changed within. Before i do that I would like input on if I should even do this or if so, how much.

Currently the core is 378.0 and the memory is 337.5

The card is fully stock. Nothing added to it.

Running card in my NC 3200+ with 512mb of PC3200.

Increase the core speed 5 or 10 at a time. Play a game for about an hour, and watch for artifacts. If you don't see any, increase the speed again and repeat. When you do notice any corruption, go back to the last speed and fine tune it. The same for memory. If you ever notice any white pixels that aren't colored, I think that's a sign the core is too hot. You'll want to try circulate air through your case, or maybe try additional measures like replacing the stock HSF. Let us know how it works out for you. Good luck. Peace.

just download ati tool and let it find the max core, max mem, than play games and test the overclock for artifacts.

Do what JSSheridan has recommended but run 3Dmark2001SE, then 3DMark2003 and, finally, 3DMark2005. If your core is to high yoour computer will most likely just crash and if your memory is to high then you're going to see all kinds of artifacting.:)

Test in more than one game, My card overclocked max looks good in cs, but in Halo I get all kinds of artifacts. Test games that use Direct X and OpenGL

what exactly are "artifacts"? graphic glitches that aren't usually there?

yep.
it is most likely possible to flash it to 9800xt if you feel like it. this will result in an increased core voltage, allowing a higher clock. however, it will need better cooling if you do this. the ati silencers are quite nice, quiet, and cool the whole case down a bit.

the original settings were 378core /338 memory. I currently have the card at 415core 360 memory and it is working great. with a load my computer holds steady at 53 degrees Cel

It ran all 3 3dMarks good, and I also played FFXI for about 8 hours straight lol. No artifacts. Is that too much of a boost for no extra cooling? The card is all stock right now. Or can it go more you think? I just used ATI Tool and let it rise a bit.

that should be fine for stock cooling, as long as you dont feel like going further. feel the back of the card when you are playing a game sometime. if it is acutally HOT, as opposed to warm, you should get better cooling. however, it should pretty much be fine if it doesnt artifact
also: you would likely be able to oc better with a better cooler, as well. same with ramsinks.
