Sounds like somthing is seriously wrong ... unless the X850 itself has a major problem, all I can think it might be off the top of my head is a weak power supply... could be putting out enough juice for the 9800 Pro & not enough for the X850?

Defective X850XT PE? If you can, try to RMA it. Check its temps, and like Captante said, make sure your powersupply is at least 350w. I believe that is the recommended wattage for the X850XT.

Try it in another machine... post the rest of your computer specs. The two most like problems I can see is bad drivers or something else (PSU) holding it down. It could just be bad, but try it on another machine.

Sounds like your psu isnt giving your new vid card enough juice. Also try and reinstall to the latest drivers using driver cleaner.

I assume you meant PSU not CPU here & it can be an issue because cards like the X850
use a lot more power when rendering 3d then 2d, so the card may not be able to function properly when gaming.

i have an Enermax EG 465 V-PE PSU running a scsi, 5 fans, 2 storage drives. Northwood P4 3.06 to 3.49 HT DRAM, Asus P4T 533-C AGP 4X MB, 1GB RAMBUS, and im trying to run DODS/HL2 @ 800X600 and starting off the first min, i get phenominal fps then it drops drastically after that. HL2 is a VERY demanding game on the cpu. I did a drive clean pro. to clean drivers, http://www.drivercleaner.net/ and followed directions... i already did an RMA but am in a crunch testing timeframe to see what the deal is. Could it be the heat/thermal values that make it drop drastically? i mean, it drops lower then my 9800 but starting off it gets way more fps then 9800. if that is it, what can i do about keeping it cool? any recommendations on a water cooler for this....

thanks everyone who has replied and tried to and are trying to help me, Thanks.

do you have FRAPS to monitor your frames rates? also try try raising your resloution to say 1280x1024 with the X850XT PE instead of 800x600, see if your FPS differs then, cause it might be CPU limited at such a low res.

Any water cooler with a good quality VGA block & some RAM sinks for the memory will keep the card cooler, I switched from a Zalman Reserator to a Thermaltake Big Water
a few months ago and its working very well, I especially like the fact that its contained
inside the PC case & yet has a water tank which fits in a 5.25 inch drive bay making
adding more coolent easy & safe.

how much did you pay for the total package? how cool does it keep it, under 42? any links to product?

yes i did using the drive cleaner tool,

yes the card does get more fps then the 9800 but i think the issue resides around the thermal temperatures.

ok, heres what happens. during the first min or 2 i get GREAT FPS, then it slowly starts to drop. this was on Bleakhill2, i didn't see under 40fps and at axis spawn, i was getting around 112-150 fps. the next map i went to was fox hunt which they dropped to 10-20avg. so to cross check the card i jumped back on Bleakhill to see how my fps were and they were on average 20-30fps lower in all areas of the map. Its the die size. .13nm ATI is pushing that die way to fast to keep stability... for me anyways

Is your card overheating? Run 3dmark05 and/or rthdribl and watch your temps.
If it is, you could get a ZALMAN VF700-CU or ARCTIC COOLING AVC-AT5 Rev. 2.

Try a clean windows reinstall, that usually resolves borked up problems like what you are having. Pain in the butt, yes, making your new purchase worthwhile is definitely worth it though.

i just read that the ATI tool http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ supports fan-speed control. and also i read the fan runs at 5% until it reaches 90 degrees, WOW... there's the answer to my thermal temperature question. I'm an ATI fan and this quest for fan-speed control has made my trouble shooting research alot more pleasent.

i might also look into a diferent sink for my card...

Thanks Alot,

A good friend of mine had this problem with Americas army it turned out that his P4 3.06 EE starts to throttle after about 2 to 3 min. causing FPS to drop Lag problems you name it. Correction to this was A64 4000+. Run your game in a window or hookup a second monitor an keep an eye on your CPU temps.

I have a AMD 3500+ Winchester core, 939 socket, sitting un-opened from last Xmas. I possibley might sell it. My next system WILL be an AMD because reviews say AMD is best for gaming but im not sure whether to wait for the 940 socket or go with a 939 socket and hope the FX series will not top out at the FX 60. I always, always, always look to the future when buying pc parts. speaking of which a simple card upgrade is cheaper then a new system... as i look at the retail box i see dust collecting on top of it :(

i don't think my MB or processor supports throttling....
