9800NP will not let me install drivers

OK, it was a looong sad weekend after my card went fubar on friday afternoon (late friday nights are "wife-approved gaming sessions" 🙂 ).

Last week I got a replacement RMA card from ATI. I sent a 9500Pro that died after 2 years, and since it was still on warranty, I received another (which to my luck was the 9800NP in subject). Now, during the 2 weeks they were processing my RMA, I plugged in a old geforce 32MB so I could do some things. I did not removed drivers or anything as was just a temporary thing. When I received the 9800NP I just plugged it in again, and it worked beautifully. That is, until that doomed friday afternoon.

I decided to uninstall my old drivers 4.3, and update them with the latest ones. But after uninstalling them, they just would not install back!

Windows said something about using a VGA adapter. I assumed that it meant my card was not. I uninstalled EVERY bit of remnant ATI and tried again, but still wouldnt install. After trying numerous things and fiddling with bios, I got fed up and went ahead and deleted my partitions, resized them and installed windows. In all those times, the card was loaded up as Vgasave

Tried changing adapters, cleaning registry entries, uninstalling things from the device manager, reinstalling them. I ended up reformatting like 3-4 times on Saturday alone. (Wife getting angry by now). But still, I had the vgasave service not letting me install my drivers.

On Sunday, after Wife left, I stole her ATI 8500 AIW from her computer and everything was recognized. (No Vgasave mode). This is what I am running on now (Wife doesnt know her computer was upgraded to a Geforce 2 32MB). I havent installed the drivers since it was late, but I will try that today in a few hours.

My specs:

Intel 2.4b no OC.
Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra R.1.0
512 MB of Corsair ram
2 80 gig hardrive
400 Antec smart power PS

I dont think is my other items, but then, I am not sure anymore.
My motherboard is AGP 2x/4x, but It shouldnt have a problem with THAT card right?
maybe not compatible?
or maybe card is bad? (being an RMA and all)

oh,BTW, when I received the 9800, it worked fine for a few days right up the point in which I decided to upgrade the drivers...

😀
