Allrighty. Got an email from my bud. He's a non-tech kinda guy. I told him what to look for and he responded.

The memory on my ATI 9800NP is labeled:

Samsung 322
(last four of memory string) GC33

I am guessing two things:

1. I got lucky and got Samsung memory. Woohoo! :wine::cool:
2. It's 3.3ns memory

Am I right on #2? Possibly this is rebadged 2.8ns memory? Talk to me, please! :D

33 would be 3.3ns

havent heard of anyone renaming high speed memory as a lower speed though, but....hell, it wont hurt, oc it and see what you get :)

Overvolt, it indeed looks like you got really lucky! Nice catch there.

I remember reading that Samsung's yields have been very good with this memory and that they actually have been "upmarking" some of thier 2.8 stuff to 3.3. How true this is, I dunno. I'm gonna find out though! ;)

My Sapphire 9800NP wih Samsung 3.3 which I flashed to the Pro BIOS will run the memory up to 360MHz. The core however maxes out around 410.

Nice find. I'm happy with my infineon 3.0 that can do 425/351 with stock cooling.

I want to too Dave101. Will using Rad clocker damage my card if I give it too much?

do I keep upping the core/memory until my games won't play, and/or use PCMark2001 and watch to see if the polygons break up?

I want to Flash the bios, but dont want to fry it. But maybe I should do it NOW while I can still take it back and exchange it for another.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT flash Infineon memory with 9800 PRO BIOS, you will end up with a non-functioning card!!! Only flash if you have Samsung memory.

Thanks for the input Lukfilm. I was really wanting to try the flash. I guess I'll just overclock it and be happy.
I just hope this card has the power to play hl2 and doom3 when they are released.

How should I go about oc'ing and testing my card to its sweet spot?

Do I up it 10 at a time then play C.Wolf for a while and see if it "artifacts"? Or just run PCMark2001?

Or can I just jump the cpu/mem to what i see others doing ... Like 425/351 over my 330/320?

The card should be good to at least a 9800 pro, so I'd up it to that point pretty quick. Then start going at smaller and smaller increments. Also, run 3dmark2003 not 2001.

Don't worry, I was pissed when I saw the mem too, but it turned out quite well. Just be careful not to go too far. I was planning to stop at the pro level but I couldn't resist going to the max :).

I forgot to mention that I do have a side panel fan blowing right over the card, so that might make my clocks a bit higher than yours will be.
