So I wwant to get a 9800GX2 for my backup rig (currently have 9800GTX+) but it has a neo ECO 420c in it. I looked at power usage on the GX2 and it says 200w, has anyone had any experience with running this card on a small PSU like this?

Not enough power, that card requires at least 550w according to this reputable site.

"A single GeForce 9800 GX2 requires you to have a 550 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total) at least 35 Amps available on the 12 volts rails."

If you don't have the 9800GX2 already, it's probably better to get a faster single-GPU card. For several reasons.

I have an AMD sempron single core processor unlocked to a dual core with a single drive and 2 sticks of 2gb memory. Im looking at total system power consumption and it says only 375w (in their review), im assuming my system pulls much less than theirs so I think I will be fine. Thanks.

I would love to get a faster single card, im just on a tight budget and a 9800GX2 has the speed and price I want.

Where are you buying from and what's your budget?

9800GX2 is only around 60% faster. While that's an OK increase, it's really not a good idea at all when considering the fact that 9800GX2 is old tech, dual GPU, runs hot, consumes a lot of power. Really more of a sidegrade when you realize it's 2012.

For a similar increase in fps without all the other crap, get a HD 7770

lol, my budget is 30$. For 30$ a 60% increase is perfect. Heat isnt an issue since I wont be any hotter, just my card, so im not sure why I would care. Power isnt an issue since it can run on a low power supply, and im not sure why old tech is an issue since it meets and exceeds my requirments. If you can find me a GTX 260/216 or a GTX 275 for 30$ ill go with that one, but otherwise I wont be able to find a 30$ upgrade this significant.

EDIT - Keep in mind that this entire system cost me less than 100$ so I dont want to drop in a 200$ graphics card.

Uhuh. Personally I wouldn't risk the 9800gx2, the PSU isn't designed for graphics cards like that.

People always miss the question "where are you buying from?". Always. Are those US dollars, Australian dollars, NZ dollars, Canadian dollars, Martian dollars? I'm going to guess US but still, it'd be so much easier if people actually answered the question the first time.:twisted::twisted:

I thought the $ meant US dollars? Anyway its US dollars and I was going to buy from CL, but if that 4870 stays at a reasonable price ill grab that. I agree that a 9800GX2 on the PSU isnt ideal, but it is feasable and I need more graphics power.

You'd probably be fine on something like a recently bought corsair cx 430, which actually outputs 430w as advertised. Not sure about a neo PSU... those 420 watts are probably from the wall, and if I am to assume it's an old PSU, I wouldn't bet on you getting more than 300 real watts out of it.

I think the 9800x2 eats about 150~160 watts at load, since a 9800gt needs about 80watts.
