You obviously haven't read all the comments condemning NV's last 2 releases ;)

For me this is good news as I will certainly wait now for the next single-gpu high-end offering from NV or ATI. Most games run well but I'm far from 60FPS capped at 1920 in most of the games I run nowadays, and that's where I'd like to be with AA on where I can.

why release a card to cater to the 1 game that actually needs it? :)

The trick of course is getting hardware hot enough and fast enough to run at high enough FPS to catch the pig. :( Nothing like that available yet...maybe with this next-gen.

Imagine doing this with a plump, juicy pig. :Q

I wont cry if it comes out earlier than I expect. I am in the upgrade mood again eventhough my current rig plays every game I own flawlessly. Intels new chips are supposed to be out this Summer.

Current rig I built in Nov 06.

E6600 @ 2.4ghz
4GB DDR 667
74GB Raptor
500GB 7200 RPM WD
EVGA 8800GTS 640

I spent more than I usually do on game machines(1500). But it has been worth every penny as it keeps on churning through the games I throw at it. I used to skimp and try to make it in the 800-900 dollar range. But then it would require an upgrade in 12 months.

And yes I am aware that Crysis will make it beg for mercy. But that game doesnt interest me atm.

I love how people throw around the word "obsolete" in cases like this simply because it got de-throned.

Indeed, it makes you wonder if they think everything below a GX2 at the moment is 'obsolete'?

I don't understand this whole thing about cards being obsolete when something with better performance comes out. Whatever happened to replacing your card when it doesn't allow you to do the things you want it to do anymore?

I was on the 6800GT up until last fall when I upgraded because the vast majority of games started stuttering...

Worse! It will turn to dust laying a coat of heat retaining silicon throughout the case. This will cause everything else to overheat and fry, thus rendering your whole system "obsolete".

I'm pretty sure most of them don't own a GX2 to begin with. Yup, they must all be retarded buying "obsolete" products.

The 9900GX2 would have to use over 250 watts if it is the same process and a larger die. Can a 8 pin connector supply 125+ watts of power?

Edit: It looks like the 9900GX2 doesn't exist. It is a 9900GTX and 9900GT. The 9900GT will replace the 9800GTX so it will be "obsolete" also. And it came out 2 weeks after the GX2. LOL So it's not us 9800GX2 owners who should be crying but the poor 9800GTX owners. Just kidding of course.

are you referring to Jen-Hsun Huang?

evidently .. and 9800 was a stopgap
.. kind of 'fitting' considering they took ATi's old name for a legendary first mini-upgrade of r300

at least NVIDIA is consistent ... G80 > ... mini speed bump and rename to G94 > ... GT200

it's called a *pattern* and they are in a rut, imo

Certainly not with their HW - just with their naming/marketing/pricing and especially their PR

It's pretty ironic... probably less than 5% of gamers here purchased a GX2, or any top of the line card, and will probably never purchase a top of the line card, yet they talk about top of the line hardware like it matters to them.

Compare apples to apples.

Best midrange card right now is the G92 8800GTS 512mb. So if you're going to talk about "end of life" then talk about what midrange card will replace the midrange G92's, not a dual GPU special purpose card.

We shall see how obsolete the 9800 GX2 is once there is a GT200 mid range card available. Worst case scenario is the 9800GX2 performs below where a $250-300 GT200 midrange card performs on release. And I think that 100% of 9800 GX2 purchasers are ready to deal with that reality.

I for one didn't expect the 9800 GX2 to be the best video card for ever and ever. I just wanted the best single card solution I could find, for my purposes.

New technology is SUPPOSED to crush old technology in terms of both performance AND price. That's why none of this is an investment. You buy what you can afford, and upgrade when you feel your equipment is outdated. That is exactly where the 9800 GX2 owners stand... with a few exceptions from misguided individuals who might have thought that investing in a $600 card would keep their rig at the top of the line for 3 years.

Myself, I am fully aware that in a relatively short period of time, just about any $200 video card I buy will crush the GX2. And I'm fine with that.

My last rig, about 3 years ago, contained a 6800GT. That was a great card that I paid about $400 for, which (IMO) totally crushed the more mainstream 6600GT. What's it worth today? Probably $40-50 at most. And where do you think 2x 6800 Ultra SLI owners are today? Do you think they're crying about how their $1200 video card setup gets owned by a $150 9600GT? No, they are just going to upgrade to whatever they can afford TODAY.

There's a lot of high horses and flagpole sitters regarding the latest and greatest video cards.

The reality of the situation is if you're not going to buy a top of the line card, then your posts about it are worth about as much as the paper your comments are printed on.

Basically, you pay to play. If you can't handle getting obsoleted, then go buy a PS3 for the quite fair price of $500.

Obsolete happens when something better and CHEAPER comes out... when under no circumstance does it make sense to buy part X because part Y will always be the better choice.

There is a good choice that the GX2 will be obsoleted by the G200, with the single G92 like 9800GTX and the 9600GT still holding a place as "budget" cards. Or the whole G92 series can be obsoleted by the G200 where it no longer makes sense to manufacture, and only makes sense to buy at extremely discounted prices.
But we can't really tell until it actually comes out. The card isn't gonna be any less powerful, it will still beat any single G92 card. It just means that it will no longer make sense for nvidia to manufacture new units of that card, and it wouldn't make sense to buy it at MSRP, only at much much lower then MSRP.

Nvidia might not be making anymore 7900GS cards, but I can still sell my old one online and it will still be of use to people. It just doesn't make sense to buy new at full MSRP, nor does it make sense to manufacture, it is obsolete.

When we talk about 'obsolete' it means there is absolutely no reason for purchasing the super seeded card anymore. All cards below a GX2 are not 'obsolete' because if you are in a cheaper price range there is absolutely a compelling REASON to buy one over another. In the case of a $600 GX2 being replaced by a $600 GT200- one would assume that there would be absolutely no reason on earth to purchase the GX2 anymore....and thus 'obsolete'.

^^ what taltamir said.

The GX2 is a band-aid SLI-in-one-slot card... and if that's what you want, then that's what you get.

G92 is G92, and GT200 is GT200. 1 GPU is 1 GPU, and 2 GPUs are 2 GPUs.

(don't you just love X = X and Y = Y analogies?)

the people who didn't purchase a GX2 at launch are [generally now] called "smart" - we even had a Big Warning a solid week before GX2 launched that 9800 series would be very *interim*

i will bet you that at least 1/3rd of the regular posters here - serious gamers - have purchased a near top of the line card in the last 5 years. i have [backwards] 2900 Crossfire < 2900xt < 88000GTS-640OC < x1950p/512M AGP < x850xt @ PE speeds < 9800p/256M flashed to 'true' 9800XT < r8500dv-128MB < Radeon 64-DDR < Rage Fury-32 ..

i know there are a lot here who are interested in the midrange .. but then we are probably one of the Top Video Tech Forums on the 'net [afaik] so that we are nothing like the General Computer video card buying Public.

i think *all* of my cards were solid midrange [plus] or top of the line cards ... nothing else made sense to this serious gamer

thank-you .. evidently taltamir had some pretty excellent analysis also that bears repeating

Or the whole G92 series can be obsoleted by the G200 where it no longer makes sense to manufacture, and only makes sense to buy at extremely discounted prices.

NVIDIA is quite smart even if their PR is lacking. They had a *solid* design with G80 18 months ago that is EoL and was expanded into their eventual speed-bumped and smaller-processed and cheaper-to-make MIDRANGE - G92 - with the GX2 currently taking the top spot away from that other [nasty compromise, imo] "sandwich" card 3870x2.

i fully expect that G92 will be cheap to produce [obviously - look at GT9600] and will be the BASIS for NVIDIA's midrange for another year and their LOW end for another year after that.

The GT200 is the "new G80" - i wonder who the design team is - and they will be using that to BLOW away r700 [sorry boys, my own prediction; i expect to be going 'green' for a bit this Fall]. That new GT200 will then provide the "top end" for another 1 year to 2 years [usually 18 months] then drop to the midrange when GT300 takes its place in 2010

wow there IS a pattern ... you just have to look a little to see it clearly
- but the problem - NVIDIA's PR really dropped the BALL - exactly like they did with 7800GTX and as i sadly predicted ... i hope they learn from the lukewarm reaction to their warmed-over 9800 series that was touted as the "2nd coming" and overpriced as such for an interim high-end.

--but then ATi dragged out r600 with 9700P>9800P>9800xt and the speed bumped and O/C'd it to make x800>x850 series
and who can forget that in-between x1800>x1900>x1950
they pretty much gave up on 2900xt>2900xt1GB >2900P?
and then small cheap processed 2900 into 3870>3870x2 - also short lived

so no finger pointing please :p
-buy what suits you and bear in mind the "patterns" of recent history

but then they will be perceived as "worth it" as it is a single GPU that [apparently] doubles 9800GTX performance .. PR just dropped the ball on that $600 GX2 :p

This is a good sign IMO. It means the GT200 cards are still on track for a mid-summer release. I can't wait to upgrade.

I would be ready to pay $600 for a single GPU that does that, although I have an older card and would see a much bigger improvement than people with current gen cards. The 9800GX2 costs that much but is nowhere near doubling the performance over a single card, considering the kinds of minimum framerates it typically pulls.

Although this all depends on which rumor is correct. I hope it's the VR Zone one. :p
