Hi there,

please bear with me, i know this was a stupid thing to do and i don't know where I had my mind, but I connected the 2-pin Audio-HDTV cable to a fan connector on the motherboard.....yeah i know :D

So a transistor on the motherboard went up in flames, luckily i was able to stop the system within 2 seconds or so....

(The mobo still works btw)

But I am more concerned about my 9800GTX. I don't have a HD-Device (yet), so I can't test it, but is it possible that the audio connector on the 9800GTX has been damaged, so that i won't be able to listen to Sound in HD-Movies or something like that or worse?)

Note: Only the transistor blew up, nothing else, no burn marks on the graphics card, doesn't smell either, works fine 2d/3d like this never happened.

Thanks.

I would be more concerned about your motherboard than your GTX for a few reasons:

1) There's physical damage to your mobo.

2) Warranty service for GPUs compared to mobos is like flying 1st class vs. riding freight with the livestock.

3) Your GPU seems to be working fine right now.

Your mobo should have an s/pdif output jumper. I'd connect that to the GTX and see if there's any problems with the sound output if that's what you're worried about. Either way its not a huge issue unless you want to use a DVI to HDMI converter for video and sound.

Thanks for the reply.

I know, i will get the mobo changed tomorrow.

So how do i do that?
I'll locate to jumper and connect it, so far so good, but how do i test it? how do i find out if spdif output is working? That's the thing i am worried.

OS is WIndows XP btw.

thanks again!

well,, good that transistor probably saved your mb by sacrificing itself ;D
if you stll have warrenty on the card, why not just return and rebuy?
