9800gt or the GTS 250?

Right, I was wanting to get a new graphic card and so far I've zeroed in on these 2 which fit my price range (in India):

1. GeForce 9800gt (512mb/1gb)
2. GeForce GTS 250 (1gb)

Which will be better? I don't really play on very high resolutions and so far I've only been playing on a 1024X768 resolution on my current 9500gt. What will be the FPS count like with a 9800gt if I play Crysis on the said resolution?

TIA

What's the difference in price between them? The GTS250's the better card, but might not be worth it if it costs a lot more (especially at 1024x768). And in case you want to compare prices of ATI hardware as well, the 4830 competes with the 9800GT and the 4770 & 4850 compete with the GTS250 (though the 4770's generally a bit slower).

The price difference between the 2 cards is around Rs. 2000/- ($ 41). Also, I hope the GTS 250 will not be overkill for my 19" monitor?

It looks like you play games at 1024x768 on the 9500GT which sounds right. However, a 19" monitor is usually capable of higher resolutions. I have a 19" WS that that has a 1440x900 native resolution with a GTS 250 and I can play Crysis at that resolution. Either the 9800GT or GTS 250 is way ahead of the 9500GT.

One more thing I forgot, the GTS 250 will run much cooler than the 9800GT.

Okay, I've decided on buying the Zotac 250 GTS early next week. Which one should I go for... the 512mb or the 1gb edition?

You may get a new monitor yet still have this card. If you have the 1GB card you should be well covered at 1920x1200 in all but the most demanding games and settings.

Awrite, fantastic. But there is a new thing I got to know yesterday. The Zotac GTX 260 is selling for $25 more than the Zotac GTS 250 (1gb)... should I buy that instead??

My PC specs are:

C2D (E7200 @ 2.53 GHz)
RAM Presently: 2GB DDR2 ---> Upgrading to 4GB Corsair DDR2 @ 800MHz (2 X 2GB)
Mobo: Asus P5K-VM
CPU Cooler: Asus Silent Knight AL
HDD: 250 GB SATA Seagate Barracuda
Chassis: CM 690
Monitor: Acer P203w (19")

You should only get the GTX260 for bragging rights because at that resolution that's about all the extra benefit you'll get out of it

I own both, if the price difference isn't too big then I suggest the gts250
you could think of it like the newest revision of the 9800GT not anything new, but none the less revised

yes for only 25$ go for it. Just make sure your psu will handle it.

The 260 is almost twice as fast as the 250 so I would get that and overclock your CPU if you can. Crysis would be very smooth on high settings at 1280 with the 260.

No seriously, for only $25 more, it's a no-brainer. Grab it and start saving up for a new monitor.

Thanks for the advice guys. :)

My PSU is a Corsair VX450W, will the GTX 260 work on this? If not then I'll buy the GTS 250 instead. Also, I'm not getting the Zotac made card (not available), getting the Palit one.

I ran a GTX280 on an Enermax 465W for a while. No issues. Had 36A on a single 12V+ rail.

unless you have urgent plans to upgrade your monitor then you're wasting money getting anything more than a 9800gt.

With a 33 amp rail that psu should work fine with a 260.

My 19inch monitor does 1600x1200. Yours should do at least 1280x1024.
Learn how to give your cpu a little overclock to 3.0 GHZ and you'll play every game avalable at the highest setting for quite a while.

I bought a Palit GTS 250 (1gb) this morning. Investing the extra bit of money into a couple of sticks of memory from Corsair.

Thanks for all the help guys! :)
