9800GT or GTX260

I?m in the process of building a new i7 box and as closer I?m getting to purchase than more and more I?m questioning myself about components.
I?m planning trip to local Micro Center this Saturday and planning to pickup most or even all components there.

So far my parts are:

i7 920
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R or Asus P6T
Antec Three Hundred
Corsair 650W or Corsair 550W
Corsair 6GB DDR3 (3x2)
WD 2x320GB in RAID1 or WD 640GB
Samsung 22x DVD-RW LS
XFX 9800GT or GTX260

I?m running dual 20? ACD setup at 1680x1050

Will I see much better performance going GTX260 vs. 9800GT or 9800GTX or 9800GTX+.
I game occasionally maybe once or twice a month (Assassin?s Creed, COD etc.)

you have a nice pc so why not go ahead and get a gtx260? surely you play more than those 2 games and at that res you could run anything out there smoothly. IMO you should oc that cpu a little and get a gtx260 and you will have a very sweet rig for a quite a while without any need to upgrade.

Thanks for reply toyota. Well unfortunately money are not unlimited. I wanted to stay around $1k mark +- $100-150. If I?ll go with GTX260 this going to be above what I thought. But If I can justify the price with obvious performance gain I would probably do it.

Then 9800GT should be good. You may have to accept slightly less than maximum visual settings for some games.

Upgrade when DX11 cards come out if you need more power.

You can always buy the 9800gt and then upgrade later. Don't forget about 4830. Pretty good performance per $$$. Usually outperform 9800gt and cost little less. heck doesn't the x58 support crossfirex and sli? You can even go dual and still have faster performance and spend less money than a single gtx 260.

Thanks guys, looks like for what I do I?ll be fine with 9800GT for now and I should be able to upgrade later in a few moths if I wanted to.
About 4830, I?m not a big ATI fan, just a personal preference.
I?m not sure that Gigabyte mobo I selected will support crossfire of SLI so I don?t think dual video setup will work, I?m not sure about Asus P6T mobo but I don?t believe it?s supports It ether.

There are few X58 motherboards that do support SLI but they significantly more expensive and like I mentioned before it?s out of my reach.

Just FYI, there's a 4830 for $69AR with free shipping at Newegg. I know you said you prefer nvidia, but with a price difference like that, the 4830 is just a better buy.

I was borrowing an 8800GT (same 'cept for the name) this week until I got another video card, and it did Left 4 Dead max settings alright @ 1680x1050, there was some slowdown during really heavy scenes, though nothing that's a real deal-breaker. Idle power consumption however was literally 15-20W higher with just the change in card. Something worth noting, especially if you're doing lighter work most of the time.

I think you made the right choice with the 9800. It is a very well rounded card, and one of the best scaling/best bang for the buck SLI options there are, with 2x9800 trading blows with GTX280, even at 19x12

You made a good choice, the 9800 GT is a good video card which is at Radeon 4830 level.

However that is a great price for a 4830 which vj8usa found.
