running a opteron165 and a new (to me) 9800GT on my home server and my UPS is reporting 275-325W , much higher than a 3000 Venice I had in there w/out a GPU. In the past when I had a 3800 x2 in it, the power was about the same as the 3000Venice when idling.

The CPU is throttling but I am not sure if the 9800GT has that ability? This is on WinXP fwiw.

So, can I flash the 9800GT's firmware? I remember I was able to do it w/ my old 4850 before ati came out w/ the proper tools, are the same tools available for the 9800GT?

Thanks in advance,
bob

I have no idea, but damn, if power consumption is a big issue, why not just upgrade. Your system is severely outdated. And yes, a 9800GT uses quite a bit of power. The older gen you go, the more power it consumes. Same goes for CPU's and motherboards as well.

well, I can deal w/ 60-70W, but I honestly didn't think 250W+ was going to be the issue. if firmware tweaking doesn't work, then yes, an update will be cheaper just from the electricity use since this is a 24/7 machine.
