9800 XT hsf replacement question

Anyone done a hsf replacement on an XT yet? First thing I noticed is how hokey the hsf looks on the XT. I think the only reason they put the Radeon sticker on it was to cover up the craftsmanship of the hs.

Anyway... I put on a Vantec ICEBERQ 4. The XT has a thin "heat sink" or flat copper looking panel on the back of the card. I assume that's what it is anywhere. I left it on by keeping the screws on the front. It's really just a backside connection to the ram chips as far as i can tell.

Second... the GPU has such a small contact area for the Vantec fan to attach to -- it almost looks like the custom molded stock heat sink may have more contact area. Regardless, I have the Vantec hsf and 4 hs on the ram chips.

My question is... will this setup work ok? Should I leave the back copper panel on? How efficient is the stock hsf on the XT?

Well the XT was built for overclocking so the stock heatsink should work just fine. I dont know how well the iceburq 4 will work compared to it. I think that it was made in geforce 4 era.

Really? I thought I caught a recommendation for it either here or at Tom's.

Anyone else know if I should put stock hsf back on?

put the stock back on... it has more surface area than the vantec... i know it looks crappy but hey... the asus heatsink looks nice. :)

Don't ever trust anything you read at Tom's.

Use that Iceberq and slap it on your northbridge. if that is already cooler, get some tape or adhesive and put it on your southbridge for the heck of it. that way it wont go to waste.
