9800 Pro Vs X700??

Looking at an old cheap AGP cards to get me by until I upgrade the rest of the system.

Xpertvision 256MB 9800pro
Xpertvision 256MB X700 - non pro.

Which would perform better?

The 9800 Pro.

Sad thing ATi wasn't able to actually release the X700 XT (if I'm not mistaken), despite that many reviewing web sites did receive sample copies for benchmarks. Now that would have been my choice over the 9800 Pro.

if it really is the 9800p 256mb version, a simple BIOS flash will reveal a true 9800xt. . . . mine is generally faster than the x700 series.

You should get a Geforce 6600 GT. They're the best card for the money from what I have seen. It easily outperforms both cards listed above.

Because it has similar core and memory clock speeds but should have twice the memory bandwidth (256-bit vs. 128-bit memory bus)--unless you're talking about a 9800P with a 128-bit memory bus, in which case get the one with the faster clock speeds. Can you provide links to each card?

6600GT glory days are over ;( ... Get a X800GTO and mod it x850xt pe and that hell better bang for buck or the x850pro from ebay arround $180ish and mod/oc to x850xt pe 16pipes 615/630

This cards 9800pro is only 128 bit memory. Does the x700 have any new tech that the 9800pro doesnt?

Yeah, you can find a used X800XL on the FS forums for less than $200 if you look. That'd be my choice.

I would take the 9800 Pro over the X700 pro as they both have the same gpu albeit the x700 pro gpu is a bit higher clocked, while the 9800 pro has a great deal more memory bandwith. This would explain why the 9800 pro performs better than the x700 pro in most scenarios.

Although I would have trouble reccomending either of them now with the much better deals available such as the 6600GT and X800GTO and GTO2.

You must also realize that the 9800 Pro is only AGP while the X700 varients are only PCIe. The X800GTO and GTO2 are also only PCIe.

Its hard to like ati's offerings at the ~$130 level with the 6600gt out there, particularly if you're stuck on agp.

6600GT AGP is the best in the lower price range. Of course you could go down the path of soft-modding x800GTOs, but for the area, the 6600GT is the best deal.

I can't find the 9800P 256MB 128-bit on their site, just their X700. I can't find memory clock info on either card, so my advice is based on my possibly bad memory--you should double-check with your store if the clocks are correct. If you're sure the 9800P has 256MB of only 128-bit RAM, then I'd probably suggest the X700, as you get a slightly more capable GPU (PS2b, more vertex shaders) clocked slightly higher (400/350 vs. 380/340) that may draw slightly less power by virtue of its smaller core (110 vs. 130nm).

Again, this is assuming my clock speed numbers are accurate. Double-check with your store.

I suppose you could take a look at the cooler on each card and guess which may sound quieter (usually the bigger the fan the lower the noise level), but I wouldn't expect anything but an annoyingly buzzy cooler at this price range.

Are you talking about the 9800 Pro 256 mb or 128 mb? If you're talking about the 256 mb, how does the 128 mb stack up against the x700 Pro?

X700's are also available in AGP.

I don't know about the 256 mb card, but my 128 mb card came with 256 bit.

OK, a real 9800p has a 256 bit bus, and either 128mb or 256mb mem. There are 128-bit versions, but those are usually labeled as such, and you do not want them. And last I checked, a 9800p usually outperforms the x700. Also, dont spend more money on a 256mb version, that card is not fast enough to put it to good use. I'd also recommend a 6600gt for a similar price - it would be slightly faster than a 9800p.

I don't think so and if it is, it's very slight and not worth upgrading.

I thought that i'd just buy this card at BB Black Friday sale and if I didn't want it, I'd Ebay it. From looking at the prices on Ebay, it looks like I'd be lucky to break even after tax and rebates once Ebay floods with these cards, especially if I open the box.

I thought about buying a PCIe even though I don't have a PCIe system yet. If I buy the card and takes 2 months before I can use the card, this might be the same price that I can get a brand new X700 Pro PCIe card for.

So, IMO, if you need the card, it's a decent deal. If you're just buying it to have another card, I don't think it's that hot of a deal.
