I have the old 128MB 9800 pro. About how much performance increase will i get if I get a x850 xt? I play CSS and BF2. What about the platinum?

You will get a pretty big performance increase. I went from a 9800PRO to a X800XTPE and I am loving it.

Yep, it will be a stunning difference actually - you will not notice that much when at 1024x768, but once you move up in res to 1280x1024-1600x1200 you will notice that the frame rates stay high whereas with the 9800P it would drop substantially, and you can also turn on some AA-AF with that high res (game depending). If you get good aftermarket cooling like Artic Cooling you can easily take a x850xt to PE levels stably. -@ stock PE is about 5-10% faster in the higher resolutions (less on low res).

For shear gpu horsepower, you will more then double your potential.

9800 Pro is 8 pipes at 380 mhz
X850XT is 16 pipes at 500(?) mhz

Presumably, if the X850XT was the same clockspeed as the 9800 Pro, it would be twice as fast, but it's also running ~40% faster clockrate so the boost in performance where you are completely gpu limited should be like 2.5 - 3x.

It kinda stinks that gpu reviews haven't been showing 9800 Pro's in their charts for a long time. A lot of people still have a 9800 Pro. One good way to gauge 9800 Pro performance would be to look at the difference between a 6600GT and a X850XT and then add 10 - 20% (cuz iirc the 9800 Pro was about 10 - 20% behind a 6600GT a year ago when they still had 9800 Pro's on the chart).

EDIT: From toms last agp vga charts:

3Dmark05 at default:
9800 Pro - 2590
X850XT - 6098

Doom3 12x10 0aa/8af
9800 Pro - 32.6
X850XT - 81.4

HL2 16x12 4aa/8af
9800XT (no pro score) - 31.6
X850XT - 69.4

Thanks for the responses. I missed out on the microcenter deal. But I will be on the lookout for a good deal.

at this point in time i would go for a 7800 GT.. I took the same route as you.. before in CS:S i got 90fps @1280x1024 with everything on high no AA + trilinear filtering.. with the x800gto2 @ 520/600 i get 110 fps with the same settings WITH 6xAA and 16xAF which really makes it much easier on the eyes.

Ok, got one for $265. I want to play BF2 at higher res and smoother rates. Impossible to snipe sometimes.

x800gto2 is not offered in AGP. The closest possible card that can be converted to an x850xt AGP is the x850pro AGP. But the newer batches are more or less unlockable.
