I have an ATI 9800 Pro 256mb/bit. I do not wish to flash its bios to an XT, I simply want to increase the core and memory speeds. I am going to purchase a VGA Silencer in the next few weeks, but would like to know how high I can set it with stock cooling. Thx in advance.

If you flash the bios to XT, you need better cooling, I don't think that'll work.

Its a YMMV kinda deal. ATItool can autodetect the max overclocks for you, but its varies from chip to chip.

I just realized something horrific. I have the r350 core, not the r360 core. That's what I get for looking at Newegg's reviews. I was kinda sceptical when i saw that it only had 6 of the 8 chips that make a rectangle. Guess flashing the bios is out of the picture now. So I'll check the ATI tool.

I have the same core with a VGA Silencer R3. I hit XT speeds, but then backed off to stock after some tests. Just wanted to see how the framerates would change in D3.

I have a socket exhaust fan right below the stock fan on the 9800 Pro. It sucks out air quite nicely, you really feel a strong flow of air. I hope that helps performace slightly. I'm running the tool right now, it's been going for half an hour now, and I'm around 412, I guess you were right about XT speeds.

How long does the test take usually? And will the memory start making increments?

You set how long to run ATITool. I usually go for 10 or 15 minutes and the ram and core are done seperately...

I wouldn't bother with any of this, the difference between that card and an XT is small.

Well it's running at 410/360 right now, as opposed to 378/338. I get about 300 points more in 3Dmark03.

You should be able to use any revision of the original VGA Silencer with your 9800 Pro. I use a Rev 2 on mine.

You can only be sure if you remove the heat sink and look. No utility can tell you for sure what core you have.

ATITool will tell you the core revision of your GPU. I did see R350 when I installed the VGA Silencer but ATITool confirms that. :(

I thought ATITOOL read the info from the chip bios I remember seeing an article where it said R350 core before flash and R360 after so you really do need to take off the HS and check

If you had 360, atitool would say 350 also since your bios would be for 350.
An exception is the MSI 9800 pro that comes with a bios that reads 360.
There are many reports that software utilities like atitool report 350 (before flash) even if you have a 360 core.
The only definitive way to tell is to remove the sink and look!

This is true; when I took off the stock HSF the core had R360 stamped on it, yet ATITool reported my card as a R350...

There was this intriguing guide online which led you through the flashing process. It said that a r360 core has all the same parts as the depicted Saphire card. The latter had 8 chips that formed a rectangle, mine only has 6; That part was one of those said to be necessary to be a r360. I based my assumption on this, knowing that utilities are flawed; I'll double check however.

Well, I'm glad I actually got to see my chip's markings then before I went off and flashed it to an XT. That would have been a travesty.

I have never removed a fan from a video card; experience = 0. And I do not wish to void my warranty just yet. Also, would it be better if I were to apply Arctic Silver 5?

Aren't those TWO statements CONTRAdictory?

You MUST remove your stock cooler b4 you install your VGA silencer . . . just buy Arctic Silver 5 whne you get your new cooler and do it all at once.

make ABsoluteLY SURE you follow the instructions eXactly! Arctic Cooling's picture-guide is very detailed and there are also threads to search in GH and Video that tell how to do it step-by-step . . . at THAT time you will know IF you have a 360 or r350. ;)
