9800 pro problem

I have recently purchased parts for a new computer. I picked up a sapphire 9800 pro and I'm not sure if the card is faulty or not. When I turn on the computer, the monitor only turns on half of the time, it never turns on from a reset. The fan has never started on the card and it seems to be pretty hot. I haven't gotten the computer up and running yet as the windows install seems to freeze up each time I try. Is there a chance that the video card could be bad or it's not getting enough power? I have a 350 watt power supply with an a7n8x mb and an athlon 2800+ installed. Any ideas?

sounds pretty jacked.... are you sure you have the connector plugged into the card? They give instructions on how to put in on.. goes from PSU, to HDD, to card.. to yadda yadda. What kind of drivers did you have on it previously? Did you use DriverCleaner2? Need some more stats =\

I have checked and the connectors are all plugged in PSU->HDD->video card. Everything is new so there are no drivers or operating system yet. Is there anyway that the card could get fried if the fan is not running? For the time being I'm just trying to install xp and troubleshoot.

Don't run it if the fan isn't on. It's there for a reason.

Try plugging the card into the power supply with nothing else on the plug. And what kind of power supply is it? And what kind of MB is it? This sounds like either a PSU or motherboard issue.

Radeon cards are junk! I tried a 9500 pro and the thing would not run a
3d game for more than five minutes w/out freezing the computer!
Return it and get an NVidia card. They work right!

I just upgraded my system from an NVidia card to an ATI 9800 Pro. The NVidia card was stable and gave me no problems at all. The installation of the ATI card was very easy and it is working as well as the NVidia card, only faster.

My reason for going with the ATI card this time was price and space. The new Nvidia cards take up 2 slots!

In any case, I am very pleased with this card and when it comes time to upgrade next time, I will look at whatever is available and make my decision then.

I am sure some people have problems with ATI and compatibility with their system as do people with Nvidia products but I would not label a company's entire product line as junk because of one person's problem.

Hmm sounds like a faulty card to me,I would try the card in another PC if possible(friends maybe) and see if the same thing happens,if so you have a faulty card,it does happen now and then with any brand of hardware.

I tried unplugging everything else except for the video card and the fan still never came on. I called the computer store and was told that if the fan never came on then there was something wrong with the card.

You can normally plug it in any spare molex lead, however if you get problems then it`s best to try a different molex connector to rule out any bad power supply to the video card from that lead.My own 9700NP is actually connected to a molex splitter that goes to one of my 80mm fans as well, works with no problems.

*ALL* video cards have issues with certain hardware or games. ATI is not perfect and neither is Nvidia. IMO they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Which is right for you depends on your hardware setup and the games you play.

But to answer your question, RMA that card. If the fan isn't coming on there's a problem with it and there's no point in troubleshooting a faulty card.

I got another Sapphire 9800 pro and installed that along with an enermax 450 watt psu. When I started up the computer the screen had red, green, and blue blocks and lines on it. Xp told me that the hardware may have installed incorrectly. I installed the 3.9 drivers and restarted. Everything seemed fine for a few hours and then the blocks and lines came back and the screen went black and the computer seemed to freeze. I know that this isn't a power issue since I have enough power. Could this new card be bad as well? When I restart the computer the blocks and lines appear in post and the computer freezes at the log in screen and then the screen turns black. Any ideas?

Is this before XP starts to load?If so sounds like a bad card again, anyway options are try it another PC,if you can get to desktop try removing the drivers and ATi Control panel, then reboot into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner, follow the instructions and finally try reinstalling drivers at desktop after reboot.

Driver Cleaner link .

You need to find out if the card is faulty or not then determine if you have a software or hardware problem, it`s a question of elimination, hopefully you`ll be able to track the problem down.

You could try increasing the AGP voltage in BIOS to 1.6v etc.

Btw does the fan come on,did you try a different molex lead from the PSU as well?(The one that connects to the video card).

This happes before XP starts to load. It appears right as the monitor turns on and the ram is being counted. The fan on the new card is working, but the card doesn't seem to be. I'll check out the drivers and try what you recommended.

The card and psu are both different.

If it looks messed up before Windows load, then that`s a very bad sign(before even drivers load) which normally means you`ve faulty card, all you can do is test it in another PC and if you get the same problem I would RMA it back for a replacement.

Heh i had to RMA 2 9800Ps for faulty fans *both different issues with the fan* so this does not suprise me Making video cards is a tricky business any tiny mistake in manufacturing can send a whole batch to the trash i have seen both ATI and nVidia batches do this sorta thing :)
