9800 Pro Overclocking

Yesterday I got my Sapphire 9800 Non-Pro and flashed it with Pro bios successfully. Now I'm trying to overclock it to as high as it'll go without artifacts (using the mother nature benchmark in 3dmark 2k3 as the tester) showing up. So far the highest I can get the core without seeing any white specs in the water is 405mhz. I've read from numerous people about how they have their core at 420mhz and higher. Am I doing something wrong? My memory seems to max out at 345mhz without seeing any artifacts. I think my memory doesn't overclock to well because I got the 3.3ns Samsung chips, so I can understand why the memory doesn't overclock too high. I'm wondering about the core though.. is it common for the core's threshold to be 405mhz? Should I invest in one of those cooling solutions for for my Radeon or would it be a waste of money? I have a big external fan blowing on the motherboard/cards right now.

With overclocking ymmv. Just because others have theirs running at 420mhz doesn't mean yours will hit that speed. And really, is 405mhz that bad? :p

I'm fine it with, I'm happy I was just able to get the card period. I just want to get the maximum performance out of it and like 90% of the people's overclocks I've read, they have their cards running at LEAST 420mhz so I was just wondering. :)

My Non pro actually hits a brick wall at 420 Mhz. After that, the game goes ape shite.

How hot do your RAM chips run? I have a 9800 non-pro with Samsung 3.3ns chips also, and even with the non-pro BIOS my chips run hot as hell. I'm scared to flash it to the Pro BIOS and get stuck with clocks that are too high to run on my card. Does the Pro BIOS that you flash to initially set it to Pro speeds, or below?

Just got back from BB with my ATI 9800np and have been playing UT2003 at 1600x1200 (uhh awesome). I've settled at 435 core/330 memory, not sure if I should flash the bios without some heatsinks on the memory because of the higher voltage.

BTW Infineon 3.0ns memory

Ok, I actually settled at 420 core 330 memory. After running the Chimp demo I was seeing a little bit of texture shimmering.

BTW you guys have to check out the demos on the install CD they make some of the Nvidia demos look pretty bland in comparison.

So what do I gain from the bios flash besides default core and memory speeds?

If you have any faith in 3dMark03 I went from a score of 4992 at stock 9800np speed to a score of 5921 at 420 core/327 mem.

This is with a Asus A7N8X, 512ram at 200x11 (3200+), WinXP blah blah.

edit: the 9/4/03 drivers from the ATI website (catalyst version 03.7)

BTW If you don't have the demos for some reason, Enjoy!
