I want to put a graphics card in my brother's machine. He's got a 2800+ cpu and a gig of ram. Trying to keep the cost under $140. Can I do any better than a 9800 pro?

You might need at least 200 dollars to buy these better video card you pick for your bro

My personal choice.. 6600gt, 6800GT, 6800 Ultra, X800XL, X800XT, X850XTPE, 7800gt and 7800gtx..

If you want better video card than I provided then you might need more than 200 to pick a good video for your bro

Boo.

It's too bad I need to RMA my 9800 Pro or I'd sell it to ya for 100 shipped.

R360 core, Hynix 2.8 memory...but somehow it died in transit to a previous buyer.

So it looks like the 6600gt or the 6800NU. Ok, thanks for the input. I've got some time, he's overseas right now, so I'll be hunting for an ar deal on one or the other.

Any particular brands to avoid or are they pretty much all the same?

This is not coming from experience but I have heard that PNY is a step below the others, but this may or not be accurate. Just FYI...

~$100-9800pro
~140-6600gt
~160-180-6800

6800 is clear winner. if you need to save money, get a 9800pro. if you can get the mnoey, get a 6800.
6800 has comparable gpu poer, but memory bandwith is much better than 6600gt.
PNY and XFX are bad brands in general.

XFX and PNY shouldnt be your 1st choice, however, if there is some rediculously good deal on them, its ok. just consider other brands to be more desirable.

Also, on a side note (FYI) @ THG they noted the price of these lower cards may be cut around the end of this month ;)

After thinking about it for a bit, I think my best move would be a 6600gt w/a new Fortron psu (his is kinda crappy). That'll get his machine up to par for a while. After using onboard graphics that 6600 card should blow his mind.

Thanks for the feedback. I've got a month or 2 to make a move on this, he won't be stateside until Thanksgiving, so I'll keep my eye on the prices of the 6600, and the 6800.
