9800 pro (not xt) vs 6600 gt for hl2 / cs:s

im building a machine for a my brother in law for xmas.
hes 15, and loves the original counter strike and would love to play counter strike source.

out of these two cards, which is better.

he doesnt have much money, and those two cards are the ones within his price range, which is better for hl2 and cs:s?

I have the 6800 GT and it rocks. I bought a cooler fan by Zalaman for it and it kicks A s s s s s . I oc it and it runs so cool I can't beleive it. I play CSS all the time and I hit 138 FPS Nothing else comes close for the price....

:thumbsup: you might want to check out the X800gt in the pricerange too. I don't really know how much it goes for now or how it compares in HL2 performance to these cards, but I know it's out now and it's supposed to be a 6600gt competator.

6600GT should be faster overall, but you might find better deals in that range, as yoyo said. I'm guessing you're looking at AGP, tho, in which case a GTO isn't an option. Keep an eye out for a plain 6800, though. It'll be slightly faster than either a 9800P or 6600GT, and will actually draw less power. (You lose some WMV acceleration to the 6600GT, tho, as PureVideo apparently doesn't work fully on the original 6800 chips, which should mean all AGP 6800s.)

I've never been really totally convinced that a 6800 is a better idea than a 6600gt.

The 6800 only pulls ahead of the 6600gt at boarderline unplayable framerates.

Depending on the game, a 6600gt or 6800 switch back and forth for what's better. I don't think I'd pay more for a 6800 unless I knew I'd be using one of the settings where the 6800 had a clear advantage.

well thats because those cards are all stock. But if he were to unlock the 6800 which almost everyone does, its a given. To 16 pipes and 6 shaders and overclocked it would outperform the 6600gt (overclocked or stock) in every bench mark.

That being said, I played HL2 completely all the way through on my 9800Pro and it ran it just peachy. Never a crash, no real slowdowns. ATI rocks for HL2 for sure.. I'd still go with a 6600GT or a 6800NU as others have said.

Ok, I don't know if I'd be comfortable doing that with someone else's computer though.

Okay, I've been in the same predicament as you were when deciding, and I played the same games at the time.

All in all, the 6600Gt is a much stronger card. However, the 9800Pro will be able to surpass it at higher resolutions and AA/AF. If you play at 1024* with 4xAA or 1280* with no AA, 6600GT is great.

Um... I don't know if you realize this but very few 6800's actually unlock to the 16 pipes and 6 shaders. If you're talking pci-e then NONE do.

Anyway, I'd still say the 6600gt over the 6800 vanilla. The same performance at resolutions of about 1280x1024 and lower and the working pure video codec (and lower price) makes it the better buy. Over it and the 9800 pro, I'd go for the 6600gt in most or all cases.
