9800 Pro crashing when doing any 3D?? Monitor loses signal

My PC keeps crashing and causing a sound loop / losing monitor signal any time any 3d comes into play. From the 3D car in the old cat drivers to Age of Mythology - the 3D rendering crashes.

For windowed apps, the 3D will go black, the system will hang for about 30-45 seconds, and the VPU will enter recovery.

If it is a full screen 3D app, the monitor will lose signal, i'll get a sound loop, and after 30 seconds the system locks up entirely or resets.

The PC runs great for anything without 3D. I've tried numerous versions of Catalyst drivers, from 6.11 to current. I've tried omega drivers. I've tried onboard audio. I've upped the AGP voltage from stock to 1.7 (didnt help). I've also tried AGP 4x in the ATi GART settings. Installed the latest VIA 4-in-1's. Nothing seems to help. I never had any issues with the card in another PC, or with a different card in this PC.

MSI K8MM-V Motherboard
Athlon 64 3200+ 754
PC3200 DDR 2x 512
ATi 9800 Pro
Sound Blaster Live / Onboard Via AC97
WriteMaster Lightscribe DVDRW
WD800 Drive
400Watt PSU

An easy check: run DXDIAG.EXE to see if DirectX is functional. Just do a search on your PC for dxdiag.exe - it will be there somewhere - and run it from the search results screen.
Good luck!

This is a fresh install of xp media center. 2 hours prior, i also tried XP pro with SP2 and that had the same problems. Both are 100% legit installations with all of the MS updates (i also tried without ms updates).

I havent tried running dxdiag, because im guessing it is going to fail the test or lock up, because any time i run anything 3d the system spazzes.

I'll check the dxdiag when i am out of work, but my guess is that it is going to lock up.

Your video card is dead, I'm sorry to be the bearer or bad news.

The only other thing you could check would be to make sure the fan on your video card is spinning if not then perhaps you could get a replacement and that might stop it from crashing but it sounds like it's dead already seeing as it won't even launch the game for a little bit.

unfortunately, you're entirely wrong - the video card is NOT dead. it works perfectly in another p4 system all day long. It is having issues only on the athlon 64 socket 754 system.

Well with all the formats you have tried I would say it's hardware.

I would think it's your motherboard, possibly the power supply. Could be the AGP port on the motherboard, I would start swapping out hardware and see what it comes down to.

well, its an issue with agp 8x / 3.0. I have it running semi stable on 4x. I wish i could get 100% stability. I might just trade it for an nvidia card. MSI said its an issue between the board and the card. The card works absolutely perfectly - just not in this system.

I saw Sound blaster live, and right away I know what I would be looking at. You did say it went into a sound loop. While that may seem to be video related, there's as much chance that it sound card related. Actually, any time I've seen the sound loop, it's alway been Sound card/driver related. Try taking the SB live out, use the onboard sound and see if the problem persists.

its video related - not sound related. I originally had the ac97 in the board thinking the same thing.

its a video problem - msi acknowledged it.
