9800 pro causing XP to hang after pass entered

So, installed the new 9800 Pro after removing all traces of nvidia from my system. Loaded up the drivers that came with the 9800 (I've since tried 3.7 and 3.8 as well) and windows will boot to the password prompt just fine. When I enter my password, the machine more or less freezes. More because it never finishes booting to desktop, less because the mouse is updated and responsive on the screen.

I've tried bios tweaks, different version of drivers for my VIA board (Epox 8K3AE), different catalyst drivers, all end with the same result. If I remove the ATI drivers the machine boots just fine.

Anyone else seen/heard of a similar situation? I know lots of people have had problems with ATI boards, but I haven't found anything like what I'm experiencing.

Thanks!
