9800 pro and Power Supply...

i have read that to run a 9800pro you need a power supply with 18A on the 12V rail. is this really necessary? i currently am running a 350W Antec Smart Blue P/S with a 2.8c(stock speed), 1 10Krpm scsi hdd, 1 7200rpm ide hdd, 1 dvd-rw, 1 dvd-rom and a floppy. i also have 1 92mm cpu fan and 5 80mm case fans in addition to the 2 80mm fans in the p/s. will i have suffucient power?

i was going to get another case instead of just a p/s, like a antec 1080, but i don't want to buy one yet. how close do you think it is?

How close do I think what is? And to what?

18A on the +12V rail is 216W (at least as a theoretical maximum). The 9800Pro uses less than 100W even at full load. Requiring that much as a minimum seems a bit excessive.

I think your system will be fine on a 350W Antec PSU -- although why you have 5(!) case fans I'm not sure...

3 in (1 on the hdds) and 2 out. i live in Phx, AZ area so my computer room is always about 80-85F even with the A/C on. my case temps stay aroun 30-32C

from this post:

bateluer: I thats cutting it a little close with all the fans. It never hurts to have a good PSU.

Dell doesn't give you a powersupply more than 400 watts, but theirs are very nice power supplies. I think it should be okay, and if you run into stability problems it might be about 80 dollars to get a nice P/S, and you can use the old one with something else.

PS, check out my sig, that has my specs, they will be useful to you. 🙂

A 350W Antec Smart Blue? That'll run a 9800 Pro just fine; it's not that power hungry(barely a nudge above 50W).😛

my old Vantec ION 400B was 14A on the 12+ I believe, and it never had a problem running my 9800Pro/AXP/A64 setups.
