9800 pro 256 bit vs 6600GT 128 bit

Hi.
I'm trying to make a decision between these two cards. ATI 9800 pro 256 bit (128 memory) and XFX 6600GT 128 bit (also 128 memory). Is there any significant difference in the performancewise?

You'll see better performace with the 6600GT, though it's not a huge upgrade (as in, if you're asking if you should upgrade from a 9800pro to a 6600GT, it's definitely not worth the money).

the 6600GT is faster then the 9800p-256bit/128MB.
(it's even slightly faster then the 9800xt in most cases) 😉

what's the price on each of them and what resolution do you game at?

Thanks. Well I ordered refurbished 9800 pro already from newegg. Seems like I made a bad choice.
6600GT refurbished is like 10 dollars more expensive. Well. My gaming machine is really old (xp 1600+), so it might not give me any difference.

I had to go through 2 6600GT cards to get one that worked, and I'm still waiting for a decent driver release to make my system as stable as it was with my old video card. One thing you'll get with the 9800 Pro is a mature product will most likely give you less hassle. However the 6600GT is the faster card.

you know . . . . next time ask first. 🙂

but it's not a "bad" choice . . . just ~10% (or so) slower . . . . the 9800p will play all of today's games at 10x7 with most details 'hi/med' and 'max/mid' and 'on' and sometimes some aa/af. 😉

Why is your gaming machine the slowest one? i'd pick the #6. AMD64 3500+ Newcastle at 2.64Ghz 😉

I mostly play flight simulation game, and I have really old flight gear set (joystick, throttle, and rudder) which uses game port. This XP 1600+ machine is the only one that works with my set. Furthermore, other faster machines are running my program 24/7. 🙂

Dont worry, if you get a 9800p with a r360 core, you can flash it to a 9800xt bios, add some cooling, and overcklock it beyound 9800xt speeds. Thats what I plan to do just as soon as my Zalman vf700 hsf arrives.

You will likely be CPU limited, so it doesn't make much difference.
My 9800np managed to hit 450MHz core with an Arctic Cooling VGA silencer (not tested stability much yet tho), so you may be able to squeeze more performance out of your 9800Pro if you wish.
But as I said, you will probably be limited by the CPU/rest of the system.
