I'm sorry if this has already been answered.

Now that Doom3 is out, has anybody compared the performance of the 128MB 9800 pro and the 256MB 9800 pro?
Is there a performance boost that is worth the price difference?

Thanks,

Navid

Prior to Doom 3, it seemed the general concensus was that the 256MB was not really worth the price increase. However, it seems the price gap has narrowed so it may be attractive.

I suggest you go over to the HardOCP site and look at their D3 bench article. IIRC, they have info/graphs comparing the 128MB v 256MB models.

The 9800 pro with 256mb DOES have an huge advantage over the 128mb one if it has the r360 core and is softmoddable to 9800 xt.

But, that would not be due to the extra 128MB of memory.

All along people had said that the 256MB version was a waste. This has nothing to do with soft moding. This is comparing the two cards with no mods.
Recently, before Doom3 was released, some said that now, may be the time that the 256MB version will show its advantage over the 128MB version.
So, I wanted to know if that was the case or not.

I am looking into getting a 9800 pro since I have never spent more than $200.00 (including games in a bundle) on a card and I am not about to start now.
I am also aware of the bios flash possibility both for the 256MB version and the 128MB version.

I'd say hes right, almost double the speed would constitute "Mopping" the floor to me... I'd recomend stearing clear of the eVGA 6800NU though, they seem to have some bugs to work out. But their GT seems fine.

I'd rather just HAVE 256MB for the future, I don't care if it doesn't do anything now. That's why i'm holding out for a 6800 with 256MB.

Not only does it mop the floor with it, it rinses the 9800s out by giving them a swirly.

For Doom 3, the 6800NU owns the X800Pro. The 9800s seem like Voodoo2 in comparison. (feeble and dated)
