Looks like its just a replacement (spec wise) for the 8800GT only using the smaller fab (like the GTX+ over the GTX)... probably cheaper. So much for names meaning anything.

That sure makes the mid-range seem really saturated and confusing with the 9600GSO-9600GT-8800GT-9800GT-9800GTX+ range. I sure hope some 15 year old dumb ass kid out there doesn't upgrade his 8800gt to a 9800gt when they finally are released.

So something like this for the 9x line...

8800 GS = 9600 GSO
8800 GT 256
8800 GTS 320
9600 GT
8800 GTS 640
8800 GT 512 = 9800 GT
8800 GTS 512
8800 GTX
9800 GTX
8800 Ultra
9800 GTX+

If it was confusing to us, we wouldn't be on Anand's forums right now. Thats not the point. It is the mainstream buyers who may not follow it as closely as we do. After all, its basically a phantom card that hasnt been announced yet. Its being sold in pre-built PC's at Costco in the US and we will see more of it. Still, many users think they are getting 9x gen tech.

I just think its silly to give a card that is essentially a 8800gt the exact same name as a whole new Generation of card. Why not go ahead and call it the 8800 GT+ like the GTX? At least you know where it belongs. It seems slightly deceptive imo...

This is incorrect. The new models are designed to replace the older models. As I understand it, all the G80 and G92 cards are EOL.

So, the lineup is actually more like this:

9600 GSO
9600 GT
9800 GT
9800 GTX+
GTX 260
GTX 280

There are still some remaining G80 and G92 cards left in retail channels, but for all intents and purposes anything that starts with an '8' is done, and anything that starts with a '9' that is bigger than 45nm is done.

I don't disagree with you here, but the problem in this case is really that the 8800GT and 8800GTS were incorrectly named. They should have been something like 9800GT and 9800GTS, and the new 9800GT would be the 9800GT+. (just like the 9800GTX)

Essentially, the 8800GT, 8800GTS, and 9800GTX should have all either been 8900 or 9800 cards, since they are all on the same core. I can see why NV doesn't want to continue to make new "8-series" card though after almost 2 years since the original 8800GTX/GTS launched.

Edit: As with any purchase, people buying things should do some research first... I recently bought a new electric stove for my house, and I didn't know jack about stoves... I do now though... That's what the internet is for.

Your missing the point, the average user really shouldnt have to do much reaserch just numbering them less confusingly like ATI do is sufficent

You don't have to... You just might not get the most for your money.

For instance, say you just bought every GeForce "GT" when it came out...

You've owned 6800GT, 7800GT, 7900GT, 8800GT, and soon a 9800GT. You would honestly have had a good card every time. You would not have made the wisest choice in every situation though.

...that's why it pays to do your research.
