Video Card: GeXCube ATi 9800 Non Pro (Samsung Ram) :D

OK, I removed all the NVidia drivers from my GF2 before I shut my system down... I uninstalled the device even before I shut down...

Put the new card in, booted up... Windows Found New Hardware... the Normal stuff.... Slapped the CD in and browsed to the drivers folder...
Said: Windows is unable to install this device. ....OooooK.

So I run the setup program on the ATI CD. After it tries to install the drivers, it says. "Cannot install device. INF file missing. Try installing a basic VGA device then run setup again."
WTF???

So I try to MANUALLY install it. I select Display adapter, browse the CD and scroll down to Radeon 9800 Pro (doesn't have plain 9800, just Pro). I select that, Screen Goes Blank after it installs drivers...

Device manager shows two items:
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatable)

Driver Selection shows two drivers:
Radeon 9800 Pro
Radeon 9800 Pro - Secondary

I ASSUME the (VGA Compatable) is the Primary Device??

I'm running on Windows VGA compatable drivers right now.

Any Insight on what I am doing wrong?

Thanks...
:frown:

Try running Driver Cleaner in safe mode you should run run driver cab cleaner and SP 1 cab cleaner first(if you`ve WinXP SP1,they can be found in tools menu of Driver Cleaner)) before you run the main Driver Cleaner program for "nvidia" to remove any old files, can be used for ATi as well if you want.( note driver cab and sp cab cleaner are not needed for 98 or ME).

Driver Cleaner download link ,there`s a readme file on instructions. Btw I just installed latest ATI drivers from their site,I never bothered with the CD drivers.

You may still have some Nvidia stuff leftover. Try using Driver Cleaner first, then re-installing the 9800 drivers.

Btw having two Radeons listed in Device Manager is normal, there should be a primary and secondary listed.

Nope... no drivers left on the machine. In fact, that's the error it gives me when trying to install the drivers...
INF Error
Video Driver not found
[OK]

Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.
[OK]
Setup crashes...

Now I know why SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people have trouble with installing ATI video cards... THEIR DRIVERS FREAKIN SUCK BIG DONKEY DIX...

What gives.

How the &#&Q#@(@#$( do you install a STANDARD VGA DRIVER on a 9800 PRO CARD?????????????????????????????

There are NO STANDARD VGA drivers... just ATI Drivers!!!

I'm about ready to send this POFS back and get a 5900 Ultra.

As already said, DL and run Driver Cleaner. I would run it in Safe Made, and while you are there, delete all video card entries in device manager, if there are any still showing. You might also try using the most recent Omega driver for the 9800. It is an all-in-one solution and is easy to install. This is what I use with my 9800.

Here is the Omega Driver link. Hang in there and you will get it going. The 9800 is a great card and is worth the effort!

*Shrug* Driver Cleaner has been ran already...

and Again... It's not a matter of a driver being installed... it's a matter of NO driver being installed.

What Blows, is I can MANUALLY install the (9800 Pro) driver on the one device labeled (Video Controller), it seems to load the driver, but the driver doesn't work.

If I attempt to load a driver on the (Video Controller (VGA Compatable)) device, screen goes blank... I have to go in safe mode and remove it again.

Now I know why so many people have to install Windows from Scratch if they want to use an ATI card... I'm glad some people have "LUCK" with theirs.

It just blows me away. I've been a comp tech for almost 10 years and have never seen anything install so crappy as this thing (though I've had a few modems give me a fit before, but NOTHING like this).

I would give the Omega drivers a try. They come as one file and go in real easy plus include "Radclocker", a nice oc utility. As I recall, in one of the readme's with them, you don't even need to un-install the old drivers first. At this stage, it might be worth a try.

XP...

Reformat? You gotta be KIDDING ME! That's Not an option! At least it is the VERY Last one. You must understand something, I'm a programmer (I know, I said I was a tech... but I'm really a programmer as of now), I have a gazillion things loaded on my computer. It would take weeks to get everything set back up!! Sure, I have backups, but it's for "emergency". Formatting is the LAST Friggin thing I wanna do.

I've never ever had to Format just to install a stupid device before (other than a mobo). I'm not about to start now.

Anyway, I have the Omega drivers downloaded. Time to reboot and try them.

Format... *shrug*

That's odd when I upgrade from 5900 fx ultra to 9800 pro all I did was uninstall the nvidia drivers, then it used windows xp default drivers
then I used the ati cd when installing it was simple you click setup then click express setup "recommended " that's it, everything was practically automatic and works great

I then went to ati's site ,downloaded and installed ati's latest catalyst drivers it was the same as above simple and flawless I heard ati drivers used to be bad but now it's much improved ,so easy to install and use even my 11 year old cousin with his 9500 pro can do it easily and perfectly everytime using ati's latest drivers

if you still have problems then it might be the cd drivers are old or like other's say, there's still nvidia drivers around that wasn't properly removed.
traces of nvidia drivers could still be around some where and you might not it ,just like how a virus or spyware that you thought you removed every trace of it but the pc still screwed.

you're an expert you should know this by now when problems persist usually it's compatibilty with previous drivers and or softwares like nero and easy cd creator for an example ,best thing to do is reformat .

it might be nvidia's drivers thats causing you problems with installing ati drivers and right away you blame ati

maybe nvidia did that in their drivers so you won't buy from their competition

they've lied and done so many low and desperate things lately to try to persuade buyers to buy from them

cindy22, I agree. It's very odd indead.

HOWEVER, being I downloaded the Omega drivers.. THEY INSTALLED!!! YEAH! :D Thanks cockeyed!!

I guess it is just a case of some CRAPPY Drivers that came with the card. It's some OFF the wall company anyway that I've never heard of. I guess I should have gotten a "Built by ATI" card instead.

The reason I didn't jump into downloading drivers from the net is I am dialed up at the moment at 26,4 speeds... it took 1.5 hours just to download the Omega drivers... but was worth it. All's well now.

I'm Breaking that friggin CD that came with this card! Arrrg! Talk about some Crap! LOL

Thanks for all your patience with my crappy attitude this evening, though I'm sure you understand.

Time to go play some games to TEST THIS BAD BOY OUT!

Oh, and BTW, this card DOES HAVE the samsung memory! So do all I have to do is download the bios and flash util from ATI and flash it (to a Pro), that's it? The program the Omega drivers installed doesn't seem to give me the option to "over-clock" it any? Memory speed only goes up to 325, Core only to 400. What do I need to get the juice crankin on this puppy?

Cheers! Games are calling me! :D

You need to delete all the nvidia.dll files in your system 32folder plus all of your registry entries (drivercleaner doesn't find them all).

Buy yourself a CDburner whitedog and backup your rig then do a format-it's the only correct way to get a clean install.

I'm a visual basic man and I reformat once a month on principal, but I have a second HD for backup only.

Glad you were able to get that thing going, weve all been in your situation before, so we understand the frustration. The clock rate tab installed with the Omega's should allow for a hiher oc than you are seeing. To change the parameter's, check the "enable clock rate change" box , then click the "advanced" button; next, move the slider to change the increments. If that doesn't work, there are other OC utilities and much info over at Rage3d.com. Have fun and good luck with your new card!

It's pretty much a given not to use the drivers that come on the CD for any video card, Nvidia or ATI. It's best to stick with the latest WHQL drivers from their website.

Tell me about it. As I said though, I have dialup at home and it takes a LONG time to download 15MB driver pack. But I did it and everything is great! :D

Uh, I have a CD burner thank you. I also have 8 Hard Drives... 2 in my rig, 2 in the wifes and 4 in my server. My computer runs a backup program every night... and NO, I'm not going to format to get a "clean install". If you work with something long enough, you can get it right. No need to "format once a month"... That's the most insane thing I've ever heard of.
rolleye.gif
My current install has been running since I got XP (whenever it came out?).... at least a year for sure.

I don't plan on formatting until I'm ready to move to a new operating system. ;)

Thanks for the, uhmmm, advice? *shrug*

Good luck in your monthly formatting adventures. :Q

Uhhh, i got a question.... what type of motherboard are you using? Is it outdated??

Just because it wont install it doesnt mean ATI's drivers suck... its probably something in your pc affecting it. Since you cant reformat... do a FRESH install of XP, that might take care of the problem. Don't send the card back.. its not the card.

Good luck

I changed from a Ti200 to a 9800 PRO without a re-install and everything runs perfectly. As long as you run Driver Cleaner 2 or Detonator destroyer in safe mode you'll be fine. Otherwise, parts of the previous drivers will be hanging around like a bad smell on your computer and cause problems. But, a re-install is guaranteed safe. :)
