98 to 98SE

I have a retail copy of win 98 (non-upgrade) and I was wondering if there is a way to upgrade it to SE? Will the critical updates and such off of the windows update put my 98 to SE? or do I have to buy a seperate copy of SE? thanks

From what I heard you can't upgrade from Win98 -> Win98SE, so you'll need to have some old version of Win95, or Win 3.1

If you use Windows Update, your Win98 installation will be 'upgraded' to Win98SE, except for the internet sharing tool.

Actually the main differences between Win98 and SE are bufixes, bugfixes and more bugfixes. Win98 SE is merely SP1 for Win98 FE.

so by doing the windows update I get SE minus something I won't use.... thanks guys, I appreciate the help.

This is exactly what I did. Still running win98 but with ALL available updates from the MS site.

Very stable, never crashes.

from my understanding of it, the only thing that win98se provides that win98fe + all windows update crap doesn't is internet connection sharing. i could be wrong, but i swear i read that on a tech site like anandech or tomshardware.

There is a ~ $20 "step-up" edition of 98SE that upgrades you from 98. I bought it when it first came out.

It might be tough to find, but www.pricewatch.com lists 3 retailers that seem to have it.

It feels faster to me than 98FE even with all the 98FE patches. Just my 2 centavos.

i still remember when i saw win98 crash on some tv show promoting it haah what a sight....
