98 SHUTDOWN

when i power off my computer freezes at the "windows is shutting down" splash screen. what's going on?

TKim, what version of 98 are you using? Original or Second Edition? There are two Second Edition Shutdown patches available here
Win98SE Shutdown and here:
Win98SE Mapped Drives Shutdown.
Are you stand alone or connected to a server? I have had many shutdown problems that were caused by Wake On LAN (WOL) ethernet cards, and having WOL enabled in the BIOS. Try disabling WOL on both the card and in the BIOS. If that doesn't work, post again and I can email you a VB script that does shut down and restart for you.

thanks! i'm using 98se. the problem is, i have the intel vc820 mobo and i don't know how to get into cmos. i just got it a few days ago so i'm adjusting. not youtypical press delete setup. also, no server. just my new home pc that i just built. any ideas?

along with the previous problem, i have another one. i tried to install this hard dirve and it said that windows could not recognize it for one of three reasons. 1. not partitioned right. 2. i'm using a 3rd party software to partition. or 3. i have a virus. well i know for sure its not the first two. the thing is if i delpart, fdisk, and format wont that kill any viruses? please help!

can i do that on my current working HD. or will i have to do that and then reinstall windows?
