I have a friend that seems to be having an awful time with Windows 98. It started when he put a 160 GB hard drive in his computer. He uses mostly DOS programs which is why he's not using XP. His motherboard supports the hard drive size, and I can access all 160 GB in Windows, but his computer is running slower now than ever. I wanted him to upgrade his machine but he doesn't like that idea. He has a 300 MHz Athlon with 160 MB Ram. Any ideas why he would be running so slow?
Thanks

98 won't run properly on anything larger than 137gig or 128gig depending on which measurement you use.

Have him partition it and it should be okay if the mobo BIOS can handle it.

300 MHz Athlon

I think you mean 300MHz K6-2...Anyway, he should partition the drive, and that should help with the limitations of Win98. As for the slowness, is he using the onboard IDE controller, or a PCI ATA100 IDE controller? If he's using the onboard one, I would suggest purchasing an ATA100/133 controller, such as one of these from NewEgg. The first one ($18) should work fine, but if he wants to spend more, those are your options!
