98 keeps redetecting video card at boot-up.

A friend brought his older system to me for a modem fix. I took care of that and a Msgsrv32 error at shutdown. I was able to find drivers for the onboard audio that took care of the Msgsrv32 problem.

During the normal course of business I booted into Safe Mode to check for multiple device listings and there were three entries for his video card.

I've been playing with BIOS settings and moving this card around to different slots and I can't seem to remedy this situation. It's not a true problem because after two to three detections, it settles down and works just fine. But in Safe Mode there are still multiple listings and well, it's just bothering me.

The only thing I have been able to determine is that it's a PcChips mobo with as SiS chipset. I can't come up with the actual model number. I've never heard anything good about these motherboards.
Like I said, it's an older system.

ARK Logic 2000MIP video card, PCI

The motherboard has 4 PCI slots, one of which has a modem in it. The latest drivers available for the ARK Logic are dated 1997.

This has become a bit of a quest for me. I've fixed what he wanted fixed and more. I could give it back to him and he will be happy. But I just want to know!!!!!!

Delete all the entries of the video card in safe mode device manager. When you reboot in normal mode, it will re-detect the video card and there should only be one entry in safe mode device manager when you go back to check.

See that's just it. Upon reboot it detects the card, does the driver thing and prompts for reboot. Upon that reboot, it detects the video card yet again, does the driver thing and prompts for reboot. And you guessed it, the process repeats.

Two detections is usually it. Sometimes it goes for three. In safe mode there are two or three entries for the card, repectively.

I delete them all, and the process starts all over.

In BIOS, I've assigned an IRQ to PCI VGA and not. I've also gone from Yes to No for Plug and Play Aware O/S. Both of these in all possible variations.

The card was in PCI slot three. I moved it to one.

Seems I recall a preferred slot for PCI video cards but I don't recall exactly. Also, I seem to remember that PCI slots are numbered in reverse order on some boards. Not sure on these items.

The manual would sure help. No gots it.
