smooth ride, not at all, my car has a very smooth ride, and lots a room and space
quality? na I don't thinks, german cars are the lowest quality cars made, even the $80,000 BMW's aren't that great
handling? ya I give ya that, but I don't care, I am not a speed demon anymore, out grew that.

gas mileage, well that just depends on how you look at. my average is 22 mpg, but on long trips can be 25 or even 26, I do lots a highway driving

looks, I am not out for show, I want a durable tuff, long life cheap to maintane, and cheap to fix when problems arise car

my car is a 1994 mercury grand marquis, loaded, leather, abs, traction control etc, 179,000 miles on it. it's still running strong and rides smooth, not hardly a rattle in it, now that is quality, repair cost the last 60,000 miles? about 350 dollars total. plus a brake job and oil changes, tires etc almost zero rust, this is a WI/MN car that goes thru cold and salt and rough roads

yep I change tranny fluid every 30,000 miles, or else problems will arise. a weakness in the car, but it's easy, I do it myself, there is a factory installed drain plug in the Torque
convertor

I also pull my 2500 pound bass boat around on long trips with this car, this would destroy many euro cars

how many miles are on it? I have no faith in any VW or Audi in the long run esp after about 70,000 miles

he best take care of it.

well........ the most boasting, or should I say hiding the real facts car owners in the world are VW (esp. jetta) and audi owners, years ago it was chevy owners.

yep they don't tell the truth about how many times there car has been fixed..................there the best cars in the world they brag, so they never have problems.

here comes the fanboy flames

I have never own an Audi or VW but I have heard numerous BMW owners who have both BMW and Audi complaint about the high maintenance cost of Audi. So take it for what's worth. If you're able to do minor repairs yourself I suggest you looks else where or get one with CPO.

yep german cars are low quality, even the big exspensive ones

how do you measure quality? that's debatable
but I go by the number of repairs in the first 90 days or the first year. and that's were german cars are very poor

even Kia beats many german cars

$50k in transmission repairs on one car or all of them?

About 35K on the A6 4.2, and 15K between the other two.

Edit - Canadian dollars, currently that would be about US$40k.

Horsesh!t.

Even with Canadian dollars, there's no way a transmission replacement will cost $35K.

Edit: and for your information, Audi engines / transmissons are very reliable, its their smaller mechanical / electronic parts that tend to have reliability issues due to over-engineering IMO. I have a 1999 Audi A4 1.8T (5 speed) by the way.

Call 'horseshit' all you want - that's what the repairs would have cost if not for unofficial warranties, which would never be extended to a 7 year old car on a resale owner.

The bill for the first, complete transmission replacement was about $15K. That one lasted a month, and Audi replaced it again, plus reimburesed for the first job. There have been a couple of transmission overhauls over and above scheduled maintenance, with a total cost of around $5000. The car has stranded it's owner a total of 5 times in 5 or 6 years now (~100k miles / 160k km), having been bought new, and it was transmission-related every time.

This is the A6 I'm talking about, and for your information, the transmission was not reliable, nor was the second one, and the third one has been a fair bit of trouble as well. This is an automatic transmission and has nothing to do with your 5-speed, but is enough to convince me I do not want an Audi.

The A4 1.8t 5-speed owner I know has never been stranded, but he has spent quite a bit more on maintenance for a 5 year old car than would normally be expected.

That is horseshit. Only a complete moron would keep that car if there was problems like that. Do you have any proof at all?

yeah sure... that's why they (german manufacturers) offer 5 years of warranty free maintenance whereas domestic manufacturers offer 36 months warranty without free maintenance.

if american car companies raised there prices 20,000 dollars they could do that too. You think your getting that warranty for free?

ps: doesn't kia or hyundia have a long warranty too?

Exactly, and $15k is way too much for a transmission replacement, especially in an Audi.

We had to replace the transmission in my moms 98 suburban 2 or 3 years back, and that only cost $5k for a brand new transmission, which is much bigger and heavier built than any Audi transmission.

Just give up the argument now dumbass. You can't back your way out of this one.

Hell, a transmission replacement on an Audi a4 or 6 doesn't cost $35k or 15k, canadian dollars or not. Cut the drug use. I'm done on that.

To answer the OP, it's EXPENSIVE to maintain these things!

Yeap, nothing is free. The free maintanence is part of the final cost.

yes 20,000... sure...

and by the way, don't b.s. us about the interior quality of german cars... american cars are a million light years away in that department. if looks aren't important to you, you are in the minority.

and FYI, the 1994 Mercury you own has an 8.8/10 on MSN autos whereas the 1997 A6 has a 9.1/10.

to me, 9 out of 10 domestic cars are ugly on outside, crappy inside, cannot handle any curves, gas hogs, etc. but hey, whatever floats your boat... if you like them, that's your choice.
