98/2k Partition Question/poll

Hey everybody,

I was wondering what would be the BEST way to partition my 30gb drive to duel boot Win98 and Win2k pro. I would like to have 3 partitions (a third to hold installation files, downloads, mp3's, etc.) Win98 will be mostly for games and web design, and 2k will be for whatever else (I hear it's much faster than 98). Any suggestions??? I was thinking a simple 10,10,10 config. Any suggestions on whether to leave fat32 for both, or to convert 2k to NTFS. I would like to know your opinions. I am open to other suggestions too. Thanks!!

neither partition with the os needs 10 gigs in my opinion. thats a whole lots of programs you have if you can fill that much space. why are you doing web design in win98 but "whatever else" in 2000? if youre going to use 2000 for the rest of your applications you might as well do web design in it as well and use 98 for pure gaming. if you use win98 for pure gaming, give it 8 GB, give win2k 6, do whatever you want with the remaining 16 GB for storage. i would say keep everything fat32 except the partition with win2k. there should be no reason you need to see the 2k partition when youre in 98 and this will allow you to access your files still in either os.
 
Here is how I would do it....

Create 5 partitions: :Q

1 for Win98 = C

1 for Win2K = D

1 for Win98 = Installed programs

1 for Win2K = Installed programs

1 for both = Shared DATA (Must be FAT32 is using NTFS for 2K)

Separating and minimizing your partitions lowers fragmentation and offers many other advantages. As for sizes, it's up to you and depends how many programs and MP3's you are planing on using. The smallest partitions will be C and D (system).

As for the option of NTFS or FAT32... It depends if you plan to let anyone else use the PC. However, I have found that fragmentation is less of an issue when using NTFS!

I imagine you already know that if you use NTFS, you won't be able to see that partition when on Win98.

NOTE: I would not make ANY partition larger than 8Gig. You want to take advantage of the smaller cluster size, and going over 8gig will move you to the next level.

win98 install-8gb
win2k install-8gb
Storage- 8gb

That sounds fine!.... Maybe add 500megs to your O/S partitions. If you ever run short in the future, you could always buy Partition Magic 6 and stretch things around.
 
I had problems installing linux in a multi boot scheme. This was because nothing located over the cilinder 1024 can be booted (around 8Gb).

I am not sure, but I guess that with newer bioses it doesn't happen. I don't know if it is only a bios problem. Be aware of it.

The new version of LILO is no longer subject to the 1024 cylinder issue for booting. THe new LILO ships with Mandrake 7.2.
