97ish Eclipse GS-T Convertible?

What do you guys think of this car? They're going pretty cheaply nowadays, they're pretty fast, easily moddable, easy on the gas mileage, has a semi-usable backseat, pretty rare..even in my area where ricers are seen on every block, and of course it's a convertible.

Anyone know how reliable these are, especially the turbo?

Nice cars except they're FWD. They're not that rare either. If you want something rare, look for a Eclipse GSX

DSM's are fun cars, but the back seat is no where even close to "semi"-usable (it's a joke) and they have lots of reliability problems ("crankwalk," turbo failure, tranny's, etc.) which is why you can find them so cheap and why Mitsubishi eventually changed the entire Eclipse line. I took a bath on my '92 GSX. They were such hot cars when I bought it ~10 years ago... AWD, fastest 4-cyl. on the road, crushing in the SCCA. Then the reliability problems came out and the value of the cars just tanked. 🙁
Still, properly modded a GSX is probably the fastest 4-cyl. ever sold in America. 10 seconds is possible. But the GS-T's have way too much power for FWD only...

Fun to drive cards, I think they changed a few things from '97, a few changes to the suspension, engine and the rear and front lights (crescents to circles). There is definitely an understeering problem when you floor it and the turbo kicks in. Other than that its a great ride with excellent curves, little drag, tight handling and suspension. The car is very low to the ground and you definitely have the feeling you're in a cockpit when driving it. There is a good deal more body flex in the convertible over the hatchbacks, but its definitely worth it when cruising topless. 😎

I just got out of my silver '99 Eclipse Spyder GS-T...the rear seat is not completely unusable; it makes a great luggage rack. 😛 Great for golf clubs or bags for a weekend beach trip. You can fit 4 adults in there, but I wouldn't consider doing it for more than an hour trip. 3 is the maximium if you want to be comfortable, which of course is the most important thing. 🙂 2 is very comfortable and the design of the car and the windshield creates very little turbulence in the cabin for the driver and the passenger. Anyone in the back better have short hair; girls need a hat or a heavy-duty scrunchie or you'll proceed to watch their heads explode as soon as you hit 50mph or the highway. :Q 😀

Anyways, I think you'll enjoy it...it was just time for me to move on to something else. Still topless of course!

Chiz

Edit: Oh yah, definitely don't get the new body style!!! Butt-Fugly IMO....'98 or '99 if you have a choice.

I was putzing around on autotrader and came across a spyder GST. Man it's such a pimp ride, I have to get one now.

Yeah it's not gonna be as reliable as a civic, but I'd love to own one as a second car.

there were no changes between 95-99 models, other thanthe front and rear bumper and headlights / tailights. Otherwise they're the same exact cars. SAme goes for talons vs eclipses.

My talon tsi awd is really fun, i would highly recommend it. They're not too bad to keep up, the only expense comes from the awd drive train. New clutch cost me 500 bucks... I never had any problems with it reliability-wise, 4g63 is a very reliable engine.

I've always liked that car. I say find yourself a well maintained, relatively low mile one and go for it 🙂

Hmm, yeah too bad they don't come in a droptop version though..
