975x vs 965 express

about to buy a mobo, just like to know whether the 975x is still the 'high-end' version it used to be or whether the newer but 'lesser' 965 express is actually just as good at a lower price?

ps. this is for a E6600 CPU, and 2 nvidia cards in SLi, do both these chipsets support SLi?

thanks!

Intel based chipsets don't support "SLI", only the nVidia based chipsets do.

thats right crossfire only on those 2 boards.
I suggest u get a nvidia nforce 680i based motherboard from ASUS,evga,DFI etc...
Those are sli mobos and have insane overclocks of 500+ FSB.Expensive but worth it especially the ASUS Stryker.
And both pci-e slots are 16x .

actually i've pretty much overshot my budget for a new pc, and i'm in one of those situations where i can't upgrade modularly, i gotta get a new mobo, cpu and ram all at the same time

so as for the video i'm goin with the 8800gts and i don't think i'll be having two of those in SLI anytime soon, so i'll get a single pcie board at a more reasonable price instead

correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems that SLi is really only intended for the people who can afford to buy two of the top-end gfx cards at the time, it seems that after that there's no point in getting 2 cards under the top-end bracket as there will always be a single card available that will outperform them and also cost less

For the value chips (E6300/E6400), you most definitely want to go the P965 route.

Asus P5B-E 1.02 revision if you can find it.

I agree, but i would go for the Asus as it has the new ADI onboard sound which is apparently much better quality than the old realteks, unless you have a dedicated soundcard, something i've never bothered with...

the 965 chipset such as the p5b deluxe will run sli but with hacked drivers.

the BEST 965 chipset board has to be the asus p5b deluxe wifi/non-wifi.

the gigabyte boards are also VERY good as well such as the DS3.

it's just a matter of what features you want.
