9700tx, how far can I overclock or CAN I?

I have been reading about replacing the bios to overclockable for a Dell 9700tx, rated at 263 clock speed. But I downloaded PowerStrip, and it seems to be letting me overclock, without changing/upgrading anything. I have stock cooling on the card itself, but there is a PCI fan right below the card, and the PCI covers are removed (big deal, right?) Anyways, I have it up to 275 right now, the article I read said to keep bumping up until you see artifacts and then you're done. Does anyone know how far I can take this, or if I am even doing anything at all? Thanks. -Joe

keep bumping up until you see artifacts and/or lock up then you're done.

When the 9700 came out it was stock at 275/275. Dell was installing those slower tx cards probably out of heat/stability concerns. They should do 275/275 stable at the very least and getting to pro speeds should be doable on some cards too. Keep bumping it up, I'd say try 275/275 for a while, make sure all your games run well, then try another 5 mhz and retest all your games. Rinse and repeat until your video starts crashing (max core) or artifacts show up on textures (memory max).

I did just what you said, I bumped up little by little, playing a round of Battlefield Vietnam on Medium/High in between. Turns out the memory tops out at 275mhz (263 stock from Dell) and the core tops out at 285mhz (also 263 stock). At 290 there were lines only when I had been playing a while, so maybe I'll use that for online. So, so anyone wondering: with a PCI fan, 9700tx overclock: 285core/275ddr (PS, pro is 325 core, there is no way to get a TX up there. And the reason for the slow DDR speed is really slow memory (3.6ns) compared to the 2.5 or 2.2 in the 9800pro's today. Thanks for the help, all. -Joe
