9700pro vs. 9800np ?

Anybody got any decent benchmarks of the Radeon 9800 non-pro? I've found a Powercolor version of the card for around the same price as a 9700pro, so comparing the two would be preferable...

tried google with the manufacturer's code but came up with nothing :(

Also any general comments on Powercolor's Radeons welcome - the site i'm thinking of buying from has no description or specs, so cant even check the clock speed is right.

main concern here is doom3 and HL2 of course, and good value :)

I'm wondering the same thing... the only thing relevant I've found is anand's old 9800 pro review from march. He clocked the 9800 pro down to 325/310 (same core speed as the 9800np, but the memory is 20mhz faster) and tested it against the 9700 pro... check that out here. Looks like the 9800 starts to really pull ahead with AA and aniso. That 20mhz memory difference can easily be made up by oc'ing. I'm leaning towards the 9800np.

The main hardware benefits the 9800 series offers over the 9700 is the F-buffer and enabling Hyper-Z with stencil shadows (IIRC). Otherwise, a 9800 is clocked slightly lower than a 9700P. If they're the same price, I suppose I'd lean toward the 9800, as those two features may prove very useful in future games.

nice info, thanks :)

bit unsure about the overclockability after coming accross a powercolor 9800pro review at hardocp, but aslong as it is doing noticably better than the 9700p -

+10% with 4X AA/8X Perf Aniso 1024x768x32
+30% with 4X AA/8X Qual Aniso 1024x768x32

thats the likely settings i'd be using, hopefully even be able to keep a little aa/aniso for D3...

this is about the closest thing i could find to a benchmark for the non-pro... here
If this is at all accurate then the non-pro overclocks to the same limit as the pro version. Still, i'd like to see a real comparison between the 9700 pro and a 9800(non-pro) when it's overclocked.

btw: newegg has the powercolor 9800(non-pro) 128mb retail for $298.

Assuming an article I read over at HardOCP is true, the Radeon 9700 PRO and 9800 PRO perform the same clock for clock when playing current games. Considering I can overclock my 9700 PRO to speeds that are higher than a 9800 PRO, I find that the 9700 PRO is a good deal. If it is the same price as the 9800 NP, you might wanna go with the 9800, just because it runs cooler according to ATI, so it might even overclock better than mine.

so far I've clocked mine at 380/320, with no problems

memory seems to max at just above 330... core I actually haven't taken higher than 380, but strongly suspect it should go to 400. so, it doesn't reach what an overclocked 9800 pro can do, and at least mine doesn't even hit the memory clock of a 9800 pro, but with the core that high you still get pretty dang good performance

it appears to outperform my friend's 9700 pro, and he's on a barton 2500 and I'm on an old palamino 1800. so bottom line is, it seems pretty good... I agree also with the guy above about how useful early z reject is going to be in games that use stencil volume shadows like doom3
