Questions for all. I recently went to fix my mom's pc which had a 9700 pro in it.... she's had it about 1.5 yrs and I don't think she ever cleaned out the inside of the damn computer... there was so much dust I'm suprised everything wasn't fried. Everything, that is except the graphics card.... she told me that one day her whole screen just froze up and everything started getting blacked out.... I just rolled my eyes, okay mom, what have you downloaded now.
so I open that sucker up and what do I see... the heatsink to the 9700 pro is hanging off the card by only one clip, not even making contact with the gpu!!! No wonder your screen blacked out.
On closer inspection, everything in the computer was clogged with dust. Ouch! It looks like the little plastic clip that was holding the heatsink up melted and slipped through the little hole.... and viola, I GOT ONE FRIED 9700 pro.
On a lighter note, l'm playing around to see if the card could be salvageable... as soon as I scrape and remove with acetone the completedly melted foam heatpad that is all over the chip.... What do you guys think my chances are of recovering this card???
Do these cards have thermal protection against overheating, etc??
Thanks guys.
