9700 Pro vs. X700

I am not familiar with the X series Radeons at all. I was wondering, Would a X700 do greater then a 9700 Pro in todays games?

Also, can the X700 be purchased in an AGP 8X format?

I think the X700 is PCI-E only so far. It would be hampered by it's 128bit memory compared to the 9700pro's 256bit. The X700 has a big clock speed advantage, but I don't know if it will overcome the halved memory bandwidth.

The X700XT will likely suffer compared to the 9700pro when AA and AF are used.

Overall, I think it would not be much of a change.

X700 non-pro absolutely not. X700pro is about equall to a 9800pro.

Looking at benchmarks, neither the (vaporware) X700XT nor the 6600GT (both 128-bit) are slower than the 9800P/XT (256-bit) with AA or AF. I was a bit surprised by this, too, but the X700's higher clocks seem to compensate well for their lower theoretical bandwidth.

Edit: Some benches here. I think looking at Call of Duty and Far Cry AA+AF benches will give you a good range (OGL Q3-era engine vs. D3D shader-heavy engine). I'm sure TechReport's, Anandtech's, and everyone else's reviews will show the same thing.

Rialto is apparently working, so we may see AGP X700Ps sometime this year. 🙂P) Not sure how soon regular X700s will follow, if at all.

This seems to be the general trend, that memory speed is not as important with DX9 as it was before, though I'm sure it will become a more distinguishing factor again eventually.

This was evident even with the 9700Pro and 9800 Pro, which saw significantly larger DX9 performance gains from an x% increase in core clock speeds vs that same x% increase in memory speeds.

Upgrade from 9700 to x700 won't gain too much if your 9700 is OCed I think.
My 9700 worked at 420/620 for 2 years and I still pleased with it.

the x700 pro is around as fast as a 9800pro/9800xt.

i have one. it is quieter. but thats about its main advantage. and they are dirt cheap on ebay now, i ended up getting mine for $145 shipped for a 256mb ATI one.

6600gt kills it but thats $185 or so.

x700pro is plenty fast for what id o basically though.
