9700 Pro & Undying

Just recently started playing Undying after a long absence, and given that the game was intended originally for 3dfx glide (R.I.P.) there are many points in the game where the frames are less than generous. The first scene, for example, before I take a single step anywhere, upon facing the mansion my fps are around 44 or 45 with my TI4600...which I would have happily returned (if it wasn't a free gift) since my opening fps for the game under the very same detail settings and resolution with an overclocked Ge3 Ti 200 was almost the same 42-43fps. Minimum fps are what we should be concerned with, after all.

I don't care about AA or jaggies; that said, anyone with a 9700 Pro play Undying and if so, what are your fps in the opening scene? Thanks.

MichaelMuck, do you have UT2003 (Retail if possible).

Curious, how does it run? What I mean by this is not flyby or anything, just when you're just playing on say a 16 player server, how high can you put the settings and resolution and still keep it 35+ fps at all times?

To MichaelMuck:
You can check the fps in Undying by hitting the 'Tab' button, then typing 'showfps'

Write back to inform of your fps for opening scene - I have a chance to upgrade to a 9700 at a discounted price but want to see if any real change will occur, in Undying as well a couple of other games optimized for glide...thanks!

Except for very specific parts in certain maps, Undying is totally CPU dependent.

Therefore if you want your framerate to increase (including in the starting scene) you need to upgrade your system.

I still have UnDying on my machine. Been trying to convince myself for months to finish it, but I never seem to find time for it.

Anyway, what you've described is not uncommon for any similiar game that's extremely CPU dependent. Having gone from a ti4600 to a 9700 Pro myself, I've noticed that at lower resolutions (ie. below 1280x1024) the ti4600 still performs slightly better in numerous games when FSAA and Aniso are not enabled. This tells me that nVidia's drivers are still more optimized than ATI's. Although the 9700 quickly pulls ahead when you crank up the res or FSAA settings, this is pretty much useless if you don't have a really HUGE monitor or care about FSAA/Aniso. Afterall, how many people really play at 1600x1200 on a 17" or 19" monitor?
