Need something pci e, comparable to 3d performance of 9700pro and dual head. Are there any cards that require less power?

Other than that, you would want something like a 6600GT. Which is comparable to a 9800Pro I believe. I would agree with deathkoba...since the GT is about the same price as the XT he mentioned. Seriously consider what he posted.

If you can spare $120, I would get this X850XT. It's the best performer you can get for around $120, even though you specified the same performance as the 9700pro, I would still recommend this X850XT.

Forgot to mention I want to go with Nvidia as I feel their drivers are heck of a lot smoother in 2D mode with multiple screens. Also need to stress that I want to use less power, not more and less noise. 3D performance isn't important as I don't play games but about equivalent to 9700p since I don't want to go any less if you know what I mean.

Reason for replacement is because my current card is driving me crazy with less than smooth 2D when multitasking. I think it's just bad AGP performance with ATi drivers. I have the 939dual Sata board which has been pretty solid for awhile now.

I would go with this 7600GS for $105 then.

That Asus 7600 GS will do what you want just fine; what is less certain is the power requirement. If that is really important, drop down a notch from the 7600 GS to the 7300 GT. Don't drop any further if you want equivilant capability to the 9700 Pro.

I figured that by having a fanless design and underclocking it a bit, it would do just fine no?

If you're not into gaming, you might want to consider a Matrox product.

I'd suggest looking at other components of your system besides your graphics card if you are have problems with sluggish multi-tasking because unless you are having trouble running multiple 3d applications you will be throwing money away replacing your 9700 Pro to increase overall 2d performance & AGP won't have any negative effect here either ... the problem is far more likely to be cpu or memory related.

Specifically what applications are bogging down on you & more importantly what are the rest of your system specs?

Edit: I may have misunderstood the op ... if this is a replacement card because you already upgraded to PCIe, then I also suggest the 7600GS.

I'm running two monitors at 1280x1028 which isn't high by today's standards but I think the 9700p is showing it's age especially considering that it's an AGP card.

I don't doubt the 9700's 2D performance when in single monitor mode but in dual monitor mode, things like switching windows, moving application windows to the other monitor, videos etc. always gives me little jerks and slight pauses.

I think it's the AGP bus not providing enough throughput or SOMETHING along those lines. I frequently have a bunch of Excel spreadsheets open while a few RDP, IE, Photoshop, music etc. going all at the same time.

I've ruled out everything else in the hardware department as the stuff loads without a problem and I've got plently of resources left. Everything just seems to point at the videocard.

What's disappointing is that both my work Dell Optiplex GX620 with a Geforce FX 5200 and the other with an X600 is perfectly smooth while cranking out the same resolution on two 19" LCDs...but they're PCI-E.

My current specs are
Opteron 165 stock speeds
1.5GB PC3200 DDR stock speeds
Dual939 SATA obard
300GB SATA boot drive (latest SATA drivers and ran benchmarks to make sure nothing disk related is a bottleneck)
9700Pro on AGP
Windows XP Pro SP2 (fresh install to make sure it wasn't the old installation)
RME Multiset PCI soundcard
2x17" LCDs at 1280x1024
