9700 pro or 9800 se

Some 9800se cards have the 256bit mem configuration, but you have to know what you are looking for and hunt around a bit to find one. Other than that, I would take a 9700pro with a 256bit mem bus over a slower 128bit mem bus 9800se which might be crippled even further by slow TSOP mem chips running 250MHz or so any day.

I just sold a 9800pro used for $70 on the forums and have seen others offer such deals, as an option.

IIRC the 9700PRO is marginally faster than the 9800, I still have my good ole Gigabyte 9700pro in my second system, I used it for nearly 4 years before upgrading to a 6800GT.

I skipped going to a 9800XT because the speed increase wasn't worth the additional cost, even now I still can run Q4 at 1024x768 low quality and F.E.A.R at 1024x768 minimum DX9 quality with frame rates above 30fps.

the 9700pro was and still is an Awesome card...it was the best AU$680 I spent on a PC upgrade....how often do you get 4 years out a PC part and still have it going strong?

No. The 9700pro and 9800pro are pretty much the same as far as performance goes. The 9800XT can be considered a (slight) upgrade due to higher clock speeds.

this is pretty much true for the most part....in the cases where th 9800pro does edge out the 9700pro it is usually by less than 5%

the 9800pro was really just a minor upgrade to tilt the performance crwon back in ATi's favour after the 5800ultra was barely able to beat the older 9700pro in a few benchmarks(mainly the ones that Nvidia used driver cheats in or as they called it"optimised code" :roll: )

most 9700pro's could be overclocked to 9800pro speeds easily, which as good as the 9800pro is did make it a pointless upgrade for those who already owned 9700pro's(like myself).

I was able to overclock my gigabyte model to 380mhz core and 400mhz(800mhz) memory....just below the 9800XT, I usually found that in 3dmark 2001 and 2003 the difference was less 100 points.

 
The Radeon 9700 Pro was a great video card and served me well for years. Recently put it into another computer and it still plays all of the latest games pretty well.
