9700 Pro? or 9800 nonPro?

Hello, fellow Anand readers! I am pondering either one of two ways to spend my hard earned $250...

I will either get a 9700 Pro and o/c, or get a 9800 nonPro, BIOS flash it and o/c it. I was wondering if anyone can help me decide which way to go! My question is, does anyone know which of the two generally comes with better memory. I hope to buy a card with very good memory since it's different between cards (like from one 9700 Pro to another, or between 9800 nonPros). If anyone knows which 9700 Pro or 9800 nonPro has better memory than the others, please let me know! Or chime in: which is better, 9800 nonPro w/BIOS flash (consider the memory that generally accompanies 9800 nonPro) or 9700 Pro (again, please consider the memory).

I plan to make my order within several days if possible. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I think if you knew you were getting samsung ram with your 9800 it would definitely be the way to go. It probably has more headroom for overclocking plus it has a few enhancements that the 9700 wouldn't. I'm not sure what the percentage of cards have the samsung though. Could be only about 50%. It seems like it's fairly rare for ones at retail stores like circuit city to have samsung.

I got my 9800 Pro at "Best Buy" & it has "Samsung" RAM... don't know if that means about the 9800 non-pro, but either way it doesn't really matter because your odds of actually finding a non-pro 9800 pretty slim from all accounts.... if you DO come across one, I would go for it over
the 9700 Pro, or the also hard to find 9500 Pro because ATI realized how easy "Mod" them into their higher priced versions.

Thanx for all the help, fellas! My new 9800 nonPro should be here by Thursday at the latest (curtesy of NewEgg).

That's weird, 'cause looking here at the user reviews at NewEgg.Com, every single person who mentions the memory on their card says they got Samsung. Are you talking about the oem Sapphire 9800 nonPro card?

If you checked the link I posted, just copy and paste it in address bar, you'll see that I am. Newegg.com stopped selling 9800np's for awhile and only about 3-4 days ago started selling them again.

There is a large thread at rage3d.com regarding the newegg.com issue and that they are shipping black pcb cards with enrontech tech memory while showing the red pcb board in their description-and it does not flash or oc well at all.

But if you can find a red pcb sapphire with the 3.3ns samsung it's a good oc.

I've got mine running 443/401 with the stock cooling and no artifacts.

Assuming A) I get the black card B) it doesn't overclock well and C) NewEgg is willing to take it back, does anyone have a recommendation as to where I can find the card I seek?

Yes ATi was furious about people flashing their nonpro's to pros. (I happen to be one of them 😀) So I guess they handicapped the new np with either a "lock" or new memory of some sort that does not accept the Pro's voltage and signal or something, im not sure. Either way, my friend ordered from www.allstarshop.com a week ago and recieved a red PCB 9800np. Now it all depends on luck.
