Well, you can find this card for arround $225 and I dont see the price droping any more then $50 before the new nvidia card comes out this christmass.

The picture quality is so far ahead of nvidia flagship that their new card might not look better.

It is up to you,
Do you feel that you will get $50 worth of enjoyment using this card from now to dec? if so then buy it now.

Btw
I dont think nvidia's new card will be out by the end of the year and if it is, I bet they will rushed it out before its ready (not a good thing).

nvidia was too busy helping make video games.

What are your system specs?
What games do you play and at what settings?

If you want to do very much gaming between now and Xmas, then you had better get something besides the onboard.
You don't necessarily have to get the best right now though, you could get a Radeon 8500 now and save up for a better card around Xmas or the first of the year, and the price difference then would probably pay for the 8500 now possibly.

It's up to you though. I would get something for now and then save up til the beginning of the year.

I know I cant play any games now.
My system is a 1.6A @ 2.0+ 512mb. But the lcd is native @ 1600x1200 so I'm hoping for a card to do higher res rather than AA.

If you can hold out until after Xmas, like say Feb....prices should be real low by then

In the meantime, you could pick up a nice Geforce Ti4200 real cheap and hang with that for a little bit

i would suggest going out and getting a 64 MB radeon 8500LE or 9000 and then getting a radeon9700 in feb or so. a radeon 8500 or 9000 should have no problem holding you over till then. maybe you can buy BFG10K's 9700 real cheap when he goes out and gets an NV30 when it comes. out ;)

thing is a 4600 is still in the 200-300 range
if I spend 120 now on a 4200 will a 9700 in a few months be less than the cost of the combined two cards.

basically (9700 cost in feb + cost of 4200 now must be less than cost of a 9700 now)
what would history say? If I had wanted a 4600 when it came out and done this I dont think it would have paid.

Well, you'll be able to sell the 4200...

Personally, I'd get the 9700 now.

I agree with sant clause(spice) on that one. The prices have stabilized at $320-330, and if you wait on this, you'll probly even wait until the next new thing, if you can afford it now, i'd go for it, unless you have someone who will buy it for you down the road, Free is Good.

Buy the 9700 Pro now with Amex Blue, and pricematch with the ads that will come out for the day after thanksgiving sales. Anyone here remember the hot deals offered then? Well, we are less than 60 days away, so I ordered my 9700 last night. So here's my plan:
1. Enjoy card now.
2. Check out "black Friday" sales (but not wait in line anywhere as I already have the part)
3. Get the difference back.

I expect to get $100-$150 back. I could be crazy, but I remember there were some MAD sales on high-end nvidia cards last year. Of course there is no guarantee my plan will be fully realized. But I have faith!

I say if you can afford it, go for it. There's no sense waiting and using that crappy onboard video for several months if you don't have to.
