9700 pro and wierd desktop problems

I just bought a 9700 pro (refrub) from newegg and I ran it through Aquamark, 3dmark 03, and looped it through 3dmark 01 for 2 hours and did not see any kind of artifacts. I also played COD and Hitman 2 for a couple hours and did not see any artifacts, but after I had exited back to the desktop all of the text that I look at is really messed up and freaky looking. What could possible be the problem. Thanks for any help.
