9700 mobile drivers

Have an Acer 8000 laptop with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 series. HD fried and reinstalled the orginal 4 yr old drivers. Recently updated to moe current driver from ATI using the 9700 mobility drivers from the ATI site. Seems ok, but doesnt seem to have grahics speed of before with graphics games. Also seems slower on business graphics.
Did I boo boo in trying to upgrade?
