I wonder how much of that writing is pagefile activity.
Very little, assuming the PC has 4GB+ RAM. Most daily use doesn't even reach 10GB/day (host), PF included.

Installers need to:
1. Write the installer.
2. Extract the files.
3. Copy the files to a final destination.
Assuming 2:1 compression on the installer, that would be an average of 5x the size of the installer itself. Plus, it will be logging, making other config changes, making system restores, backup data to roll back with in case of failure in addition to the system restore, and so on. So, 1GB of downloaded updates could very well result in 5-10GB of SSD writes.
