I am thinking of building a Core 2 Duo system and haven't looked too much yet about the best MB. I will probably use a 6600 CPU. I know that at this point in time the real options are 965 or 975 chipset boards. There appears to be a big price difference. I tried to find reviews to help my decision but they didn't really hit the nail on the head. I know we've got huge amounts of experts here so I am asking for data and opinions. Thanks ahead of time for your help.

You know I would like to know this too. I've heard with the 6600+ a 975 is the better choice, but then again I don't plan to really do any OC'ing or run dual video cards. So I dunno, subscribing and bumping to find out :)

I am beginning to wonder if maybe the biggest difference is possibly that the 975 allows for the dual video cards? I have been out of touch with the Intel world since the Athlon came out and need to study this more prior to my purchase. But as like you if the primary difference is simply the support for dual video cards, which I also don't plan to implement, then I don't need that either as I don't plan on dual cards. If I learn anything else I will post.

Conroe Buying Guide: Feeding the Monster

To sum up the article, currently (at least with this revision of 965)

975X = generally more stable and higher OC, possibility of dual vid cards
965 = cheaper

This may change soon with the new revision of the 965 chipset supposed to come out in September.

I think the 965 is also missing an IDE controller on-chip (yes SATA, no PATA). 965 mobos usually include another chip for the IDE, but some have had issues getting DVD drives, etc up and running for Windows install.
